MSc Dementia Studies

Course Description

This 3 years part-time course is intended for UK and international:

  • health and social care professionals who want to gain a specialist qualification in dementia
  • volunteers who have contact with people with dementia

The course will further enhance your understanding and application of the theoretical concepts and range of evidence guiding care for people with dementia.


Venue/Location

The course is delivered by distance learning which means that you can study at times to suit you in your own home.

Curriculum Details

Year 1 consists of one compulsory 30 credit module:

  • Understanding Experiences of Dementia

You will also be able to select an optional 30 credit module from the following:

  • Evidence Based Dementia Practice
  • Dementia Training: Skills and Approaches
  • Any other relevant module from the School of Health Portfolio

Year 2 consists of one 30 credit compulsory module:

  • Practice Development and Organisational Change

You will also be able to select one optional 30 credit module from the School of Health portfolio.

Year three consists of a single 60 credit dissertation module, which you will complete under individual supervision from a member of the course team.


When does the course take place?

This course starts in September each year. The academic year runs from September to June and is divided into two Semesters: September to February and February to June.


What are the entry requirements?

This course is suitable for anyone working in a setting that provides care to people with dementia or provides support to people with dementia in a paid or voluntary capacity.  You should possess a first degree in a relevant subject or equivalent e.g. National Qualifications Framework Level 6, and GCSE grade C or equivalent English language. You must also have access to a computer with internet connection and be prepared to spend on average 15 hours a week on your studies.

(Applicants who do not have the above qualifications should speak to the Course Leader as it may be possible to arrange to submit other evidence of ability.)

Applicants whose first language is not English should have IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
