Working as an adult nurse will involve the use of initiative, observation, assessing what is best for the patient and acting on decisions. Nurses need to be willing to take responsibility for the well being of others, using caring, counselling, managing, teaching and interpersonal skills to improve the quality of patients' lives, sometimes in difficult situations.

Child nurses work with children of all ages with a variety of health conditions, ranging from babies born with heart complications to a teenagers with broken limbs. Children's nursing takes place in hospitals, day care centres, health clinics, in the community or the child's home, with nurses often required to do shift work to provide 24 hour care.
Child nurses need to be able to respond to the challenge of caring for someone who is sick, but who may be too young to express what is wrong. They should also have a keen awareness that a child's health can rapidly take a turn for the worse, and the knowledge to deal with this.
Being a child nurse will also involve working in partnership with children's parents, carers and siblings, ensuring that the child does not suffer additionally from the stress of being ill or in hospital, or to help them carry on with treatment in the home.

As many as one in three people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives, regardless of their age or background. Conditions may vary from personality and psychological disorders to neuroses and psychoses.
Mental health nurses work with GPs, psychologists and others to help care for patients with mental illnesses. This is a rewarding role, with mental health nurses providing an increasing level of care in the community, visiting patients and their families at home, in residential centres, in prisons or in specialist clinics or units. Mental health nurses are often required to do shift work to provide 24 hour care.
Liaising with a patient's family, listening to and advising those who live with or care for a patient, dealing with occasional aggression in a sensitive and effective way and developing the ability to empathise with patients are everyday aspects of this role. Mental health nurses also have an opportunity to specialise in areas such as alcohol and drug misuse.

Midwives offer individual care to women and their families and help them take part in their own care planning during and after pregnancy. Midwifery involves supporting the woman and her partner from the confirmation of the pregnancy, through the birth of the baby and the post-natal period.
As midwives work with women and their families through all stages of pregnancy, they need to be aware of the social and cultural context in which childbirth takes place. They will normally be the lead person in caring for pregnant women, and therefore have to be capable of working independently as well as within the wider health care team.

Physiotherapists understand what is involved in movement and how injuries, pain and problems associated with disease can be managed and treated. This can include the assessment and treatment of problems as diverse as sports injuries, back pain and rehabilitation after a stroke or long illness.
