British Academy - Postdoctoral Fellowships Competition

BRITISH ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY - Early Career Project Grants -   The annual closing date is 31st January.

EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council)

  • First Grant Scheme - This scheme helps new academics apply for funding at the start of their research careers. There are no deadlines and no limits to the funding provided.
  • Career Acceleration Fellowships - Career Acceleration Fellowships provide support for talented researchers at an early stage of their career. Up to five years funding is available, and there is an annual call for proposals. Career Acceleration Fellowships are offered across the whole of the EPSRC remit.

ESRC , (Economic and Social Research Council) - Early Career Researchers - see website for options

EUROPEAN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY ORGANISATION (EMBO) - Young Investigator Programme - annual deadline 1st April.

Leverhulme Trust - Early Career Fellowships - To provide career development opportunities for those with a proven record of research who do not hold, or have not held a full-time established academic post in a UK university or comparable institution in the UK. All fields are eligible.

MRC , (Medical Research Council) - New Investigator Research Grant

NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) -

  • New Investigators Competition
    This is for investigators at the outset of their scientific career who are within 3 years of first becoming eligible to apply for NERC funding as a principal investigator, and who have never received funding on a NERC research grant. The maximum funding is £50,000. Annual closing date: 1 February.
  • Early Career Development Awards
    of up to 3 years initially, to provide further post-doctoral experience and to support outstanding environmental scientists as they become independent investigators. 

Newton International Fellowships - this is an initiative of the UK's leading academies - the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society. The Scheme has been established to select the very best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world and enable them to work at UK research institutions for a period of two years. The Scheme covers all disciplines covered by the three academies - natural and social sciences, engineering and humanities.

THE NUFFIELD FOUNDATION - New Career Development Scheme (this scheme at present is under review for 2010)

ROYAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING -

Royal Society - Early Career Fellowships Scheme - This scheme provides seed corn funding for new projects of timeliness and promise initiated by research scientists at an early stage of their career or by established scientists wishing to change the direction of their research.
