CREATIVE LABS | Exhibition and Seminars

25 Jan - 26 March 2010. Richmond Atrium

 creative labs - Yan Preston

Exhibition Launch 5.30pm, Monday 25 Jan 2010, Atrium, Richmond Building

Creative Labs is a partnership project between Yan Preston, photographer/artist, Sue Hayton, evaluator, Hayton Associates and Lou Comerford Boyes, Research Fellow, University of Bradford. As a collaborative research team they have been working directly with schools, artists and historians to explore whether they can capture and define some of the catalysts of creative knowledge transfer, as well as what creative knowledge transfer really looks like within the partnership context.  The research has generated many interesting findings and Yan's work is her response to this experience.

River Ribble & Sweets Bees by Yan Preston

The River Ribble is a collection of 9 large-format photographs taken at precise locations along the river's length. Using Ordnance Survey Maps Yan divided the river into eight equal lengths. The nine dividing points were marked on the maps and the photographs about the Ribble were taken ONLY from these points. This 'is an attempt to see a river in a more `natural' state, free from the meanings imposed upon nature by us. Yan's approach also provides a metaphor for the research process where the researcher needs to resist or embrace their own subjectivity depending on the nature of the research.

The other aspect to the exhibition is Sweets Bees, an interactive piece built with mannequins and colourful sweets. It is a playful look at the bitter-sweet complexities of working in partnerships. There are many potential benefits of working with partners, but the difficulties of establishing a shared vision and in satisfying different partners¿ needs can often counter-balance those benefits.

Seminars 2 - 4pm, Fri 5 & Weds 10 Feb 2010, D Foyer, Richmond Building

In the seminar series Yan, Sue and Lou will be using the exhibition as a starting point for presentations, activities and discussions that aim to reveal the role of reflective practice in creative collaborations, what we mean by creative knowledge transfer; as well as the impact this understanding might have on practice and the role of each person acting as co-researcher.

For more information on the seminars and to book your place please contact Sue Hayton sue@haytonassociates.org.uk or 01274 832039.

Creative Labs is funded by Arts Council England and the BusinessLink Innovation Fund.
