About the scholarship

The University of Bradford is offering the Professor Rae Earnshaw Scholarship in Big Data for an outstanding, self-funding candidate paying Home/EU fees, who has registered for our MSc Big Data Science and Technology programme for September 2017 start. This programme, delivered by leading academics in their subjects, will deepen your understanding of software development and systems for big data analytics, statistical data analysis, data mining, data privacy and security, data visualisation and exploration. MSc Big Data Science and Technology is accredited by BCS - The Chartered Institute for IT for full CITP (Chartered IT professional) and partial CSci status.

As an MSc student you will join our high quality postgraduate taught and research team that includes other MSc and PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and academic staff. You will also have opportunities to attend our long-standing research seminars and industry talks organised by the research groups, and benefit from the successful AAA (Advanced Automotive Analytics) Research Institute, the Cyber Security Interdisciplinary Centre, the Digital Health Enterprise Zone, the Internet of Things lab and Computing Enterprise Centre’s industry inspired and research projects in Big Data, Open Data, Smart Cities and Internet of Things. We partner with top Smart Cities in Europe in research and knowledge transfer projects, such as the European North Sea Interreg SCORE: Smart Cities + Open data RE-use that will offer you opportunities to develop your dissertation for cutting edge big data challenges within an international top collaborative environment. For example, this year’s student project portfolio processed data from NHS Bradford Trusts, Bradford Metropolitan City Council, Digital Health Enterprise Zone, British Geological Survey and the British Library, stock market as well as open data, AAA Research Institute and international research projects (such as EC SEURAT-1 COSMOS). The University of Bradford is also offering comprehensive doctoral training programme.

Emeritus Professor Rae Earnshaw is a leading scientist with the University of Bradford who is donating the scholarship to cover the cost of the tuition fee at Home/EU level in the Postgraduate Computer Science specialism area. The University of Bradford continues to be a pioneer in the area of Computer Science within higher education in the UK, offering a wide spread of courses at an undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as undertaking research that creates a positive impact to society and academia.

Eligibility criteria

The criteria for selection are academic excellence and financial need.

  • Self-funding UK and EU students paying Home fees.
  • The successful candidate will have at least a 2:1 degree in a relevant topic and will be registered for the MSc Big Data Science and Technology programme to start in September 2017. 
  • Scholarships are awarded to the students who submit the best statements on the application form as judged by the panel. The panel decision is final.

Payment amount & frequency

The scholarship covers full tuition fees for the applicable course (£7,750).
