The Arts
on Campus
Theatre
Opened by playwright Alan Ayckbourne
in 1976, Theatre in the Mill
is a busy professional studio theatre venue located on campus. During
term-time the theatre showcases the best in contemporary touring professional
performance from around the country. Companies performing at the Mill
range from brand new emerging companies such as Lost Dog (from Bradford),
Cassanidance (Leeds) and choreographer Lucy Cullingford (London), through
to established companies such as Frantic Assembly, Volcano, Leikin Loppu
and Rejects Revenge.
Theatre
in the Mill plays host to many different theatre groups and activities.
The thriving Bradford
University Theatre Group (BUTG) offers you the opportunity to work
on all aspects of theatre production. Some ex-BUTG members have gone on
to work in the theatre, and often return to assist with current productions.
An offshoot of BUTG now manages two venues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
each year, playing a major role in attracting quality international work
to the Fringe and winning two 'Fringe First' awards at the 1999 Festival.

There are free workshops throught
the year covering all aspects of theatre work. Develop your ideas as a
writer and director, and take part in our frequent new writing events.
Workshops take place both on-site and in partnership with other organisations.
During the past year we have celebrated our diverse communities through
events such as the Asian Theatre School (with Red Ladder Theatre Company)
and the Music Societies on campus.
The current Artistic Director
of Theatre in the Mill, Iain Bloomfield, has a background as a writer
and director for leading theatre organisations throughout the UK.
Whether you are a curious beginner
or a seasoned pro, Theatre in the Mill is
the little venue for big ideas!

Visual Arts
We have a long-standing policy
at Bradford of promoting informed interest in the visual arts. There is
a permanent collection of some four hundred pieces, which are displayed
around the various buildings on campus.
Gallery
II, situated in the Chesham Building, has for several years been a
base for touring contemporary visual arts shows. A recent change has seen
the Gallery feature more work by local and up-and-coming artists, as well
as showing exhibitions with workshop events.
The Gallery also features a
series of talks on a variety of arts-related subjects which aim to complement
the work of academic departments.
Next door to the University
at Bradford College there is also a Gallery and Craft Centre showing the
work of both students and professional artists.
