Careers - earn while you learn

The JobShop

Student. The ability to earn while you learn is increasingly important to today's students. Our JobShop has been set up to help you find local part-time work, on and off campus whilst you are studying. We can match your skills and experience with a range of vacancies notified to us by employers and give you help in applying. The work can range from bar or manual work through to course and career related vacancies such as Support Assistants and Web Designers, and the jobs vary in length from one day to permanent part-time.

We recommend that students work no longer than 15 hours a week so as not to affect their studies. All students are paid at least the legal minimum wage.

It's not only local employment we can help with, we can also help with any vacation work you may be looking for, as we belong to a network of similar JobShops in other institutions around the country.

"The staff at the JobShop are well informed, efficient, helpful and human! I now have a job which fits perfectly into my already busy lifestyle, and I am being paid for skills I am acquiring while studying. Perfect!"

Impact

Student doing a presentation. We are the lead institution for an innovative programme called Impact. Impact is targeted primarily at minority ethnic students, designed to enhance employment skills and increase employment opportunity.

The project has a proven record in helping students build their self-awareness, raise their aspirations, and enhance their self-esteem and motivation. It offers a range of services including guidance, mentoring, workshop and seminar programmes, and opportunities to engage with potential employers.

"Prior to my awareness of Impact, I was trapped in an atmosphere of poor self-esteem, ignorance of the job market, lack of self-confidence, fear of challenges, competition and I generally felt I was not suitable for employment. My drive and desperation for future success led to my awareness of the Impact Programme, which I consider today as my 'Manual to Success'.

"The workshops have been of great value both for boosting my confidence and in enhancing my chances for future employability. Ever since I joined the programme, I have been very successful in all my applications including my most recent offer with the Inland Revenue. I will recommend the programme to anyone who has a burning desire for future success and who wishes to be in full control of their destiny."
