The department uses the EcoCampus Accreditation to manage our environmental risks and impacts.
This is a staged approach to ISO14001 and we are now working towards the full platinum and ISO14001 accreditation, due July 2016
We use our EcoCampus system to manage legal compliance, risk management and continual improvement across our eight significant aspects:
- Pollution Control

EcoCampus Platinum and ISO14001:2015 Awards
The Department of Estates and Facilities are very proud to announce that together we have achieved EcoCampus Platinum and ISO14001:2015 for our operations.
Our Environmental Management System is the newest international management standard and provides us with many benefits – reducing environmental impacts, saving money, lowering carbon footprint, helps ensure compliance, business continuity, engagement and raising awareness.
The external auditor, Richard Walsh from NQA said:
"Estates and Facilities, sees that sustainable development is key to moving forward successfully and to that end a new 10 year strategy for the University is being drawn up that will take things right through to the mid 2020's."
On top of compliance and risk management this focus has delivered sector leading carbon footprint reductions, £Millions saved on utilities, world leading green buildings and an edible campus. Many of these projects have been award winning.
Progress has encompassed all of the department:
- The Building Section delivering sustainable construction projects and an improved natural campus
- The Engineering Team minimising pollution risks, modernising the infrastructure and improving efficiency
- The Ancillary Services Team handling our wastes, composting, furniture reuse, all with zero to landfill
- The Security Team being the key group for emergency response.
