Common Purpose Staff Development Day

Date: 17 June 2010 - 17 June 2010

On 17th May 2010 colleagues from across the University and a range of local employers were brought together to take part in a special staff development day designed by Common Purpose. The group explored the challenges and opportunities in their working practices and shared their understanding of the role of the University, and the Escalate initiative in particular, within the district and region.

Trevor Higgins, Partnership Director BT plc & Chair of the Bradford Employment & Skills Board opened the day with a keynote speech on the current situation of employment and skills in the district.

Participants in small groups then visited three local employers, PACE plc, Mailways Packaging Solutions, and Yorkshire Building Society to look at their workforce development needs.

Following the visits, Café conversations took place with representatives from Airedale NHS Trust, PEC Building Services, and Bradford Metropolitan District Council to consider communication with employers, public/private sector funding/spending cuts, costing and pricing and perceived high demand for `generic¿ skills and discuss how the University, Escalate, businesses and organisations may respond and co-operate together.

Following feedback from visits and discussions during these conversations, a SWOT analysis on current practice was undertaken in group exercise and action points for the future of engaging employers through the University and Escalate programme were generated.
