Mechanical Engineering

Studying Mechanical Engineering at Bradford will take you to some exciting places, both in Bradford and further afield.

You'll explore a wide range of engineering subjects, including computer-aided engineering, materials, robotics product design and innovation. All of these will give you the broadest possible base from which to launch your career and we're proud that 100 per cent of our recent graduates have gone on to find employment or to further study.

Automotive engineering is a real strength of the Bradford course: the school has excellent links with global companies, such as Ford and you’ll be able to see at first-hand how these companies design, build and test their products.

Rigorous testing

Each year staff arrange a visit to Ford’s test track, called the Proving Ground, at Lommel, in Belgium. Here, you can see not only how rigorously the company tests its own design, but also how competitors’ products are put through their paces.

Throughout the course you’ll get the opportunity to study in groups and to work on your own projects. The course is designed to build your engineering skills, independent thinking, and ability to negotiate and co-operate within a team.

You’ll be learning how products are produced from concept stage, through to design and production, guided by excellent tutors, who are themselves actively involved in cutting edge mechanical engineering research. Making use of the University’s brand new laboratory facilities, you’ll be experimenting with materials and techniques and learning valuable skills that will equip you for the workplace.

Paid placement

Students are encouraged to undertake a paid placement year in the third year of the course. Our staff have excellent links with global companies automotive sector, as well as in the manufacturing and medical industries. We can help you make the contacts you need to gain this valuable experience in industry.

Representatives from these companies regularly visit the University to deliver lectures and workshops to our students and in the final year of the course you’ll be supported to undertake a project which explores a real challenge in industry.

All the Mechanical Engineering programmes are accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and strongly influenced by a professional advisory body, comprised of people from industry. This ensures that our courses give you a solid and relevant foundation for a career in mechanical engineering.
