Information for parents and carers

Transitioning to university life can be a big change.

As a parent or carer, you bring valuable experience in providing support.

Developing independence and autonomy

Starting university will require a period of adjustment.

A large part of university education is about developing resilience and independence to stay on track and succeed.

Students need to be able to communicate effectively, manage their workloads and access sources of support. These skills encourage growth and development in supporting all areas of life.

Gathering information

You can help them to make a short list that they can bring to their first appointment with us.

The list could include:

  • the main barriers and challenges that they might face
  • previous support at school or college
  • any support and solutions that they found useful

You can also help them gather any appropriate documentation, such as diagnostic assessments or medical diagnoses that would be useful to bring to their appointment.

You are welcome to attend this meeting if we have the student's consent. We will provide you both with a disclosure form to complete and return.

What we can share with you as a parent or carer

The University follows the UK General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

This prohibits us from freely sharing information about any student.

As a result, we are unable to share information with you as a parent unless we have explicit written consent to do so.

Students can also let us know if they would like us to share information and what information they are happy for us to share.
