Understanding the interlinkages in Community-Driven Development: individuals, community-based workers (CBWs) and institutions

Call for Papers: A one day workshop on Wednesday June 14, 2006 held at Heaton Mount , University of Bradford's School of Management. To enhance our discussions, interested practitioners, academics and representatives of relevant funding bodies are invited to join.

Background

The idea that community-driven development contributes to the accessibility, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and cultural effectiveness of service delivery has maintained its credibility over the decades. Nevertheless, there are few critical studies of the functioning of Community-Based Workers (CBWs), their relationships with the beneficiaries, and with relevant institutions.

The workshop is facilitated by the Livelihoods and Poverty Research Group at Bradford Centre for International Development . In particular, the workshop links up with the (External) Department for International Development (DfID) funded research in Tanzania and South Africa, ‘Understanding Community Action: Exploring the interlinkages between individuals, community workers and institutions’ .

Aims of the Workshop

This workshop seeks to bring together critical studies of Community-Driven Development, with special attention for Community-Based Worker (CBW) programmes.

In this workshop we will share scholarship and practitioner experiences with regard to community-driven development and community-based workers. Papers for this workshop should reflect on community-driven service delivery and in particular on the role of CBWs.

If you are interested in presenting a paper, please send an abstract to Dr Jelke Boesten ( j.boesten@bradford.ac.uk ). Please use the same address to contact us if you are just interested in participating.
