LSS Wireless RoamNet information
LSS would like to remind all that, due to the nature of wireless networks,
it is not possible for us to control what wireless basestations may be
available on or near campus. It may be a computer discovers, and attempts
to connect to, a wireless network that is not genuine RoamNet. Before
typing in a username and password to any web page some attention should
be paid to the server certificate which can usually be spotted by clicking
on the locked padlock symbol in the web browser. The genuine University
of Bradford RoamNet certificate is verified by GlobalSign. For enhanced
security it is recommended to use Wired RoamNet.
Locations for Wired and Wireless RoamNet can be found by browsing to
http://www.roamnet.brad.ac.uk/
and clicking on the link entitled "Where to find RoamNet".
In the meantime if you are setting up a wireless network, or thinking
about doing so, you are reminded the University has a Wireless Networking
Policy which can be found at http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/regulations/policy/wireless.php
Basically the policy says don't set up any wireless basestations without
consulting LSS first. Its aim is to make sure whatever is set up works
reliably and securely to the satisfaction of all interested parties.
If you have any questions please contact ictservicedesk@bradford.ac.uk

Cash/petty cash requirements - news from Finance
From time to time, most departments require cash to enable them to function
and there are over eighty departments within the University that hold
a Petty Cash float. The Inland Revenue govern this type of expenditure
to ensure that it is an 'allowable business expense'. The list is endless,
but generally they allow items to be purchased such as hospitality tea
and coffee and ad-hoc stationery items that may not be available through
the usual channels. I will be contacting all petty cash holders to make
sure that their float is still required and that the level of their float
is correct to their requirements.
In addition, and quite separately, departments and schools may require
Cash Advances to enable them to arrange and fund a specific function.
These could include Degree Day Celebrations, Summer Schools and small
one-off payments to volunteers for research purposes.
With immediate effect, we are introducing a new, more formal way of dealing
with requests for Cash Advances. This will help us comply with Audit Requirements
and enable us to assess exactly how much cash is out in the departments
at any one time.
You will complete a form, have it authorised and send it the Cashiers
Office at least 3 days prior to the date the cash is required (please
note, if this is impossible we will always try and accommodate your requirements).
On the form, it will be necessary to estimate the date on which you should
be able to provide receipts (or proof of expenditure) for cash spent and
return any unused cash.
In the past, some departments simply rolled forward any unused cash,
but the new procedure will require surplus cash to be repaid. I know things
are very busy but we will contact you regarding any outstanding Advances
that become overdue. Under normal circumstances, just one Cash Advance
per Department will remain outstanding at any one time.
For further information, please contact Jill Miller on ext: 3123.

Art and Archives - An anniversary celebration (Gallery II)
Friday 1 December 2006 - Friday 19 January 2007
Free
The University of Bradford celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2006.
During the year, a varied and lively programme of events has been held
to enable the University's friends and contacts to share our past and
look to our future.
This exhibition aims to show visitors some of the rich visual legacy
of these 40 years. In particular, the display will celebrate the role
of Professor Ted Edwards, the University’s first Vice-Chancellor,
in creating the unique ethos of the University: the practical application
of knowledge to human welfare.
The University recently received his Archive, and the exhibition will
feature images from this and the other historic collections of rare books
and archives, along with selections from the University's collection of
paintings and other artworks. The exhibition is produced by Special Collections,
based in the J.B. Priestley Library at the University, which cares for
over 100 collections of archives and rare books, including the J.B. Priestley
Archive, the history of the University, Bradford, Yorkshire Dales, archaeology,
peace studies and much more.
