Guidelines for Assessment Committees and Boards of Examiners 2001/2002 sessionThe information pack which is circulated annually to help staff prepare for meetings of Assessment Committees and Boards of Examiners is now available in Departmental Offices. The guidance documents derive from the University's Regulations and Procedures, which always take precedence over the guidelines where there is any apparent discrepancy. Please note that this year, in view of financial constraints, the pack is not automatically being circulated to all members of academic staff. In an effort to target recipients more effectively, Departmental Secretaries/Administrators are being sent three copies, to distribute to key staff involved in the Boards of Examiners process within Departments. The Information Pack is available on the Web at www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/assu/1-2002-04-25.html or via the ASSU Information Page on www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/assu/information.html If you have any queries about the regulations, the information pack or the operation of Assessment Committees and Boards of Examiners, assistance can be obtained from the appropriate contact person in ASSU for your School.
News from the Language Unit, School of Lifelong Education and DevelopmentThe International Foundation Programme (IFP) is in the process of being approved for a Semester 1 2002/03 start. The IFP should prove to be an aid to recruitment for all Schools of the University. The purpose of the IFP is to raise the level of academic English of motivated students, postgraduate or undergraduate, to appropriate levels with the aim of satisfying School/departmental entrance requirements and providing the students with a solid academic English base. The ideal participant is any student who, on the basis of subject knowledge and achievements, would be immediately accepted on a degree course but whose English is currently at an unacceptable level. The student could thus be made a conditional offer for a degree course for entry one academic year later, the condition being that the appropriate level of English be attained before entry. The Language Unit would decide on acceptance on linguistic grounds on the IFP. At the end of the course the confirmation of the level of English will be by recommendation of the Language Unit, via formal internal assessment. The course composition is nine single modules, covering the essential academic English skills, and a triple negotiated module. The negotiated module will be assessed for the English and related skills, but there needs to be a degree of collaboration with and input by the receiving departments. For further information please e-mail: langunit@bradford.ac.uk Graham Harding, Director, Language Unit |
