New. Nominations for Honorary Degrees

Members of staff are invited to consider nominating individuals for the award of honorary degrees of the University. Further details with regard to current policy and associated guidelines can be found at:

http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/student-registry/Degreeceremonies2005/Honorary_Degrees.htm

Proposals, to include biographical details and a full supporting statement, should be sent under confidential cover to Nick Buck, Student Registry by Monday 22 August 2005 for consideration by the Honorary Degrees Committee at its 7 September meeting.

Nominations received after this date can be considered at meetings of the Committee to be held later in the session.

If you are interested in putting a name forward and would find it helpful to discuss the case further before doing so please contact Nick Buck on 3038 or email at n.j.buck@bradford.ac.uk.

As you will no doubt appreciate, it is most important that any persons nominated for an honorary degree should not be made aware that there was any possibility of such an award being conferred upon them.

New. Notification of Works to Horton D

To allow the installation of a new fire alarm panel in Horton D, the existing fire-bells throughout Horton D will need replacing with electronic sounders.

The proposed programme for changing bells to sounders is as follows:

  • Morning of Tuesday 2nd August 2005, change over in basement.
  • Afternoon of Tuesday 2nd August 2005, change over on roof level.
  • Morning of Wednesday 3rd August 2005, change over on level 5.
  • Afternoon of Wednesday 3rd August 2005, change over on level 4.
  • Morning of Thursday 4th August 2005, change over on level 3.
  • Afternoon of Thursday 4th August 2005, change over on level 2.
  • Morning of Friday 5th August 2005, change over on level 1.
  • Afternoon of Friday 5th August 2005, change over on level 0.

To ensue that all new sounders are operational the fire alarm system will be activated for a short duration at 12.00 pm and 4.00 pm on each day.

During the works, all manual call points and automatic heat detection will remain operational.

The electrical personnel carrying out the works will be carrying air-horns and will patrol the respective area of works. Should they discover a fire, whilst patrolling the respective areas, they have been instructed to trigger the fire alarm and call Security.

Electrical personnel will also be carrying walkie-talkies, so as to communicate with other team members, who will all "sound" their air-horns. We draw the building occupants attention to the fact that in the event of a fire, during the transition week, there is the possibility of hearing one or a number of alarm sounds.

These being:

  1. Fire alarm bells
  2. Electronic sounders
  3. Air-horns

On hearing any of the above, could you please evacuate the building in the normal manner.

From Friday evening, 5th August 2005 all fire alarms within Horton D will be of the "electronic sounder" type.

We take this opportunity to inform building occupants that Horton D will be closed on Saturday 20th August 2005 and Sunday 21st August 2005. This is a necessary precaution as the building will not have full fire alarm cover for the two days as the existing fie alarm panel is removed and replaced with a new fire alarm panel.

Further details will be issued, nearer to the time of the proposed closure of Horton D.

Should you have any queries regarding either element of the works, please contact Mario Szkwarczuk on ext 5022.

New. Telephone and Computer Network connections for Academic Year 2005/06

ICT Servicedesk would like to ask all those who may be wishing any voice and data connection work to be done before the start of teaching in the next academic year (26th September 2005) to send their job requests in as soon as possible. This covers installation of new voice (telephone) and data (computer) sockets, connection and/or moves of existing sockets, moving of phone numbers and other similar requests.

We are anticipating heavy demands on our staff and contractors over the summer vacation, and would suggest that all job requests are sent in by 5pm on 12th August 2005 to ensure completion before 26th September 2005.

We will do our very best to deal with any requests arriving after this date but we can't guarantee such jobs will be done before the start of term.

As usual contact ictservicedesk@bradford.ac.uk or extension 3333.
