New Leadership and Management Diploma Course
People Development are offering a new Management Diploma this year.
The course is suitable both for those new to management, and those with
established management roles. The diploma is awarded by the Chartered
Management Institute, whose curriculum we will follow, and whose materials
we will use.
The course is designed around a number of workshops, three residential
two-day workshops and eight one-day workshops. Participants read course
materials prior to attending a workshop, and undertake a piece of assessed
work after each workshop. The workshops will take place at monthly intervals
between December 2005 and November 2006. The programme is designed to
maximise personal development for participants and to enable the University
to learn from participants’ experience. The programme is designed
to enable most of the learning and assessment to fit in with participants’
work. The course ends with a work-based project, reflection on experience
and a business game.
Full details from People Development - http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/staffdev/mgt/cmi/index.htm
Course tutors will be Pete Sayers and Caroline Chambers (from People
Development at the University) with some help from Tony Burke (of Insight
Consulting) plus a number of visiting speakers.
Please note that this course is FREE of charge and all course materials
will be provided.
If you are interested, let us know by emailing staffdev@bradford.ac.uk,
or arrange a meeting with one of the tutors. The phone number for People
Development is 3102.

Law is all around
To mark the arrival of the degree course in Law, we have created a new
display of Special Collections in the J.B. Priestley Library Atrium. Law
affects and is influenced by all aspects of life: most of the Library's
Special Collections, although not collected to support law research, contain
material reflecting their creators' involvement with some aspect of law.
Enclosures at Malham Moor, commercial law courses for wool buyers,
conscientious objectors . . . we have tried to show that "Law is
all around".
Thanks to John Brooker for curating this exhibition. We hope to keep
it on show until November.

Counselling Service gets a makeover
The Counselling Service for the University of Bradford and Bradford
College has been refurbished over the summer break.
Workers have given the Counselling Service’s rooms in the Communal
Building a brighter feel and there are now easy chairs, plants, and a
water feature in the entrance area.
Counselling is free for all students and staff at the University and
the College. Students can come for counselling anytime during their time
at either institution. Staff are offered up to 15 sessions in any academic
year.
Mary Dailey is a member of the Counselling Team. She said: “We’re
delighted with the new look our rooms have been given. It’s more
relaxing and much smarter than before.
“Counselling provides an opportunity to talk confidentially and
in private about any matter which may be causing concern. The aim of the
process is to help people understand their situation to the point where
they can see what the most appropriate course of action is for themselves.”
An appointment can be made to see a Counsellor by contacting the Counselling
Service in the University’s Communal Building, or by calling 01274
23 5750, or by e-mail: counselling@bradford.ac.uk
The service is open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, and until 7pm
on Thursdays during term time.
Visit the Counselling Service’s web pages at: www.bradford.ac.uk/counselling
The Counselling Service website has a lot of information and links on
a range of mental health and other issues, as well as giving information
on how to contact a counsellor.

International Students - Visa Extensions
At this time of year, many International Students need to extend their
visas. Shirley Moorhouse, Student Adviser in the UBU Advice Centre, is
qualified under the OISC regulations to help them with this process. Providing
that students follow her instructions, she can send their visa extension
applications and documents to the Home Office under the ‘Student
Batch Scheme’.
One of the documents required by the Home Office is confirmation that
a student is attending their course.
In order to standardise the information provided from as many Departments
as possible, and to help Staff who may not be sure what details to give,
a template has been produced and is available on SAINT. It is an SCE letter,
reference IO Attending.
The information required is minimal and hopefully such a template will
make the provision of this letter much simpler.
If you have any queries please call Shirley on ext 3248.

Exhibition at Gallery II
Chinese Art: Traditions and Innovations
Friday 16 September - Friday 14 October 2005
Weekdays 11am - 5pm (Thursdays until 6pm) | Free
Chinese art goes back to the first millennium before Christ and was the
source of inspiration for Japanese art before the eighteenth century.
After recovering from the Cultural Revolution, Chinese art is prospering
again.
This exhibition of contemporary Chinese art includes paintings strictly
following the Chinese classical artistic tradition, and paintings which
bring innovation to the tradition as well as works seeking inspiration
from the very early stages of Chinese art, folklore art, religious art,
and a few works which reflect the international art movements of the late
20th century.
This exhibition is presented by Dr. Rebekah Xiao Zhao, who moved from
China to the UK with her family after gaining her PhD in Chinese History
in 1994. She currently teaches Chinese in Ampleforth College, Leeds University
and Bradford University (School of Management).
