New. Be Aware - Identity Theft

There have been increasing cases of credit card and debit card fraud, involving in extreme cases the 'theft' of someone's identity. Some simple steps can make this much more difficult:

The numbers on your credit card are often regarded (e.g. for telephone sales) as adequate information for a charge to be made. So keep the numbers secure.

Dispose of credit card slips securely. Don't allow your credit card to be processed where it can't be seen (as many restaurants do).

Don't give credit card details or Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) to anyone who telephones you. Some frauds have involved bank customers being contacted apparently by their bank asking for such information. Banks NEVER work like this. Contact the bank if you think this is necessary, but do not reply to such emails or telephone calls.

Don't give out other information (e.g. your mother's maiden name) often used by banks as a means of identifying you. Never tell anyone your PIN, and beware of anyone trying to read your PIN when you are using a cash machine.

Make sure you have effective arrangements for post to be forwarded to you if you move.
