From the end of term (Friday 11th June) Jazzmans and the Staff Refectory will close for the summer period.
Staff in the University may be aware that the government has recently introduced new anti-discrimination laws in regard of sexual orientation. The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 make it unlawful for someone to be discriminated against in the workplace on the grounds of homosexuality (except in relation to 'employment for purposes of an organised religion'). In terms of the University, it cannot now lawfully permit anyone - staff or student - to discriminate, harass or victimise any member of staff or any student on the grounds of sexual orientation.
It is important to note that the legislation does not just cover lesbian and gay people, but anyone - gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or heterosexual - who has been, or could be, discriminated against on the grounds they are believed to be of a particular orientation.
It is now imperative that we work within the University to create an environment in which all staff and students, whatever their sexuality or gender assignment, feel welcomed and valued, and in which homophobic behaviour is not tolerated.
I am interested in calling a meeting for members of staff who wish to begin discussions on how we might set about better achieving this within the University. Expressions of interest in participating in such a meeting, or the raising any of issues indicated here, can be addressed to either Ian Burkitt or Clare Beckett (i.burkitt@bradford.ac.uk; c.beckett@bradford.ac.uk).
The Bradford Local Association of the AUT fully supports this initiative. In September 2002 the AUT and NATFHE produced a joint statement urging all Local Associations to negotiate with their institutions a policy on Equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) Staff and Students. This meeting is an essential first step towards the formulation of such a policy. The AUT statement can be found at: http://www.aut.org.uk/media/docs/jointlgbtequalitypolicy.rtf (external link, will open in a new browser window)
The Regulations can be found on Her Majesty's Stationery Office website at http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2003/20031661.htm (external link, will open in a new browser window)
