Innovations Digest

A new Digest highlighting the work of 49 projects set up under the 2000-2002 Innovations initiative has been published by the HEFCE.

The Innovations initiative sought to assist the HE sector in meeting a number of key challenges, namely to secure greater social inclusivity and to enhance the fit between individual graduate capability and the world of work.

Among the projects highlighted in the digest is the Impact programme hosted by Bradford University, which provided learning and guidance to ethnic minority students to improve employment skills and equality of access to graduate jobs.

To obtain a copy of the digest, please email: a.masters@bradford.ac.uk

Information from Academic Standards and Support Unit (ASSU)

University Policy on Optionality

Section 5.1 of the Regulations Governing Undergraduate Awards places a restriction on the number of core units which are permitted on courses. Due to an increasing number of requests for waivers for programmes which did not meet this requirement, the Academic Policy Committee received a discussion paper on this issue. The committee, whilst affirming its support for the restriction, resolved that a working group be established to propose a definition of the purpose of optionality and to identify the evidence needed by CARTs to demonstrate that this purpose had been met, (if this was not through the conventional route of providing optional units), and where/how this evidence should be provided. The Senate, at its meeting in April 2003, approved a new policy in respect of optionality, following recommendations by APC.

The new policy is effective from the 2002/03 academic session and will obviate the need for Course Teams/CARTs to apply for waivers to the Regulations.

University Policy on Ordinary Degree Students Topping-Up for Honours

The Academic Policy Committee, at its meetings in February and March 2003, discussed the outcome of a consultation exercise which had been undertaken in response to issues relating to Ordinary Degree students who wish to top-up for honours.

This was a complex subject and the consultation raised many related/linked issues. The University has therefore taken the opportunity to re-affirm some basic principles contained in the Regulations, as well to clarify the issue of topping-up and make changes to other related regulations in the areas of student achievement and progression. These were approved by the Senate in April 2003.

The changes will take effect for all first year students registering in September 2003. However, please note that some of the clarifications are effective for all students in the 2003/04 session.

Full details of these can be found on the University's web-server at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/assu/Topping_up_ord_to_hons.pdf
