Come along this week and hear about the progress that is being made on the assimilation of staff onto the new single spine and have your chance to ask questions.

New. Cares at Christmas

The aim of the project is to deliver 30 food hampers and toys to the Wesley Housing Project for single parent families that are being supported by them.

If you have any food, toys, tins, 'buy one get one free' items and you don't need them please, please, please can you drop them off at the UCAN office in the Communal Building or Students' Union reception by Friday 10th December 2004.

New. NSPCC Christmas Quiz

Would like to have a go at the NSPCC Christmas Quiz and subsequently raise funds for the NSPCC?

Entry into the quiz costs £1.00 and the winner will receive £30.00 of high street vouchers. All proceeds go to the NSPCC.

New. Notification of Works - Richmond Main Building

Refurbishment of Richmond E75

Work will commence on Tuesday 23rd November 2004 and be complete in approx 3 weeks.

Asbestos Removal Work

The removal of asbestos ceiling panels - Richmond Building rooms M28a, M28b and adjacent lobby. Work will commence on Friday 26th November 2004 and will be complete on Sunday 28th November 2004.

Should you have any queries regarding the work, will you please direct them to Mr Andrew Hague on extension 5020.

Fire Alarm Sounder Test
Sunday 28 November 2004

A sound level test of the fire alarm system will be taking place within the Richmond Main Building. The test will begin at 08.15 hours. The areas affected will be A, B, Mezzanine, C and D Floors of the Richmond and Carlton Wings B, C, Mezzanine, D, E and F of the Link Block and the Great and Small Halls. The fire alarm sounders will be operating throughout these areas until the sound level test is complete.

Bradford University Theatre Group present:
Off The Page

Off The Page is a collection of short plays staged by both new and experienced directors, taking established writing 'off the page' and into the spot light.

It promises to be an enthralling and varied night of theatre - we have five vastly different pieces to present all with different directorial teams and cast.

The night consists of extracts from:

  • A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare
  • Essex Girls, by Rebecca Pritchard
  • The Outside Dog, by Alan Bennett
  • A Day In the Death of Joe Egg, by Peter Nichols
  • Boys' Life, by Howard Korder

A Choral and Orchestral Concert with a French Flavour

Join the University's Orchestra and Choir for an evening of French Music. The Orchestra will be performing Delibes Ballet Music to Sylvia, Bizet's Carmen Suite, and will be joined by the choir for Gounod's Messe Solennelle (St. Cecilia). The University Recorder Players will entertain with a short programme of French baroque music.

New. Places available on the following Staff Development Unit events:

Learning in Groups Weekend - a Friday evening to Sunday afternoon with undergraduate students. To help staff learn more about how to organise student learning in groups. It's also good for your own team development skills and lots of fun. Friday 26 to Sunday 28 November 2004, Friday at 6pm to Sunday at 4pm.

Managing Change - a half day course for middle managers to help: understand the general principles of managing change and how to assist staff through the uncertainties of a change. Friday, 29 November 2004, 09.30 - 12.30.

New Staff Induction - Provides information on various central services and a brief overview of the structure of the University and who to speak to get more information on specific areas of interest to you. Also to allow an opportunity for you to meet some service providers and other new staff. Monday, 6 December 2004, 11.45 - 15.00

Introduction to Transactional Analysis (TA101) - This 2-day course provides a powerful way for us to begin to understand what makes us 'tick' and to why we relate to others as we do - Why are we as we are? Why do we do what we do? Attendance on these two days will entitle participants to receive an official 101 Certificate issued by the Institute of Transactional Analysis. Tuesday 7 & Wednesday 8 December 2004, 09.15 - 16.45

Counselling Skills (Level 1) - An introductory course, which aims to give relevant examples of the types of situations you may face when working with students or colleagues who are distressed, and techniques for dealing with these situations. It is particularly useful for personal tutors, and it is hoped that through the event, staff will be better familiarised with the sources of support within and outside the College or University. (Anyone completing this course will be eligible to attend the Counselling Skills Level 2 course, which will run during the academic year 2005/6). Tuesday, 21 December 2004, 09.00 - 16.00

New. Children in Need - thanks

The Support Staff from Languages and European Studies would like to thank everybody who contributed towards their Children in Need fundraising. We are delighted to announce that we raised £175.00 (from sales of Pudsey biscuits, muffins, badges, photo competition, raffle tickets and donations), plus £60.50 from the sale of Pudsey Bear merchandise.

The winners of the Raffle for the Rat, body lotion, candles, were as follows:

  • 1st - Cathy Illingworth, Biomedical Sciences (we fear for the Rat's safety with this Dept as his new home!)
  • 2nd - Roberto Espindola, CES
  • 3rd - Karolina Terzidou, Final Year Languages student

Winners of the Baby Photo competition were:

  • 1st - Anne White and Ruth Grundy (full marks!)
  • 2nd - Kamila Aitsiselmi, Farid Aitsiselmi, John Russell (12 out of 14)
  • 3rd - Devika Seupaul (10 out of 14)

New. Sale of Christmas Cards for UNICEF

Students fron Peace Studies will be selling UNICEF Christmas cards this week.

The Christmas cards sale is on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th of November. It will be from 12.00noon to 3.00pm in the common room in Pemberton building.
