West Yorkshire Fire Service Strike Action

With the threat of strike action by the local fire service increasing in their attempts to gain extra pay for performing a challenging and sometimes dangerous role it may have effects on everyone within the University.

We will not be able to rely on a fast response by the army if they are called to respond to a fire. We must therefore bear in mind that the army are not familiar with the area and their vehicles are much older and slower. It is therefore essential that we take steps to reduce the risk of fire in our own areas and we evacuate buildings quickly and effectively if we hear the fire alarm sounding.

There are a number of precautions which everyone can take to secure the safety of themselves and others.

These are :

  • Be proactive and prevent fires starting by identifying possible fire hazards such as overheating equipment, damaged wiring, overloaded sockets, accumulations of paper, etc. Take action if required.
  • Enforce the no smoking policy in building doorways, as these areas are occasionally used for temporary storage of waste items at certain times in the day.
  • Report burning smells immediately to Security.
  • Be vigilant at all times.
  • If you discover a fire, sound the fire alarm and contact Security (4499) on the nearest safe telephone to notify them of the location.
  • Identify your nearest means of escape at all times and be aware of your assembly point outside the building.
  • If you are responsible for a lecture or event ensure that everyone under your control leaves the building on the sound of the fire alarm and is present at the assembly point.

Please bear in mind that the faster we respond to a fire, the greater is the chance of reducing the risk to people and buildings.
