Closure of Chesham C4.1 and C4.2
Staff and students will be aware that over the past 2 weeks the lecture
theatres on the top floor of Chesham, rooms C4.1 and C4.2, have been closed
for a safety inspection. The problem is associated with the ventilation
which has had to be switched off. Since these rooms have no natural ventilation
they are rendered unusable.
In order to rectify the problem we will need to close these rooms for
the rest of the first semester. Staff in Room Bookings are working to
relocate all affected classes. Schools will have been notified of the
changes by Thursday 17 November.
However we know from the relocations of the past week that we will not
be able to find rooms for all the displaced classes. It would help us
if Schools could let us know where their class sizes are less than anticipated
when the booking sheets were completed last June. Even if your numbers
have only gone down by a few, such information would help us find alternative
rooms for others. The class sizes we are most interested in are those
in excess of 100. Please email any information to room-bookings@bradford.ac.uk
We will continue to post room changes at the entrances to Chesham as
well as on the doors leading from Chesham floor 4 lift lobby. In addition
information will be posted in the two main lifts in Chesham.
This disruption comes at a time when we have no permanent Room Bookings
Clerk and the job is being covered by others in Estates and Facilities.
Please use email wherever possible to communicate with the Room Bookings
office at this time as it is a surer means of ensuring there are fewer
mix-ups.
We are going to take the opportunity of the closure to carry out the
deferred planned improvements to the ceilings, lighting and AV facilities.
We apologise for the inevitable disruption this will cause to teaching.
This is unavoidable but we expect to have improved rooms available in
the Second Semester.

Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities

Student Transcripts
Claire Cuvier has recently been appointed as the new Transcripts Co-ordinator,
replacing Shamaila Anwar who has left the University to take up a research
post at the University of Ulster. Claire will start her new post in January.
Her main responsibility will be to co-ordinate the implementation of the
Transcript Project to enable formal university transcripts to be prepared
from SAINT for all taught course students. The first cohort of students
to receive the transcript will be postgraduate students graduating in
December 2005, and they will be sent their transcripts sometime in the
early part of 2006. Following that pilot, from summer 2006 all students
who receive an award of the University will receive their transcript alongside
their award certificate.
Claire's duties will also include the management and co-ordination of
the process of module registration across the University and the co-ordination
of matters relating to overall data administration within the SAINT system.
She will be based within the SAINT Support and Development Team although
she will also be working closely with Student Registry.
This post has been funded for two years from the e-strategy budget.

Furniture and general waste clear-outs
We are having a lot of problems with dumping of rubbish and surplus
furniture and equipment outside the entrances and loading bays in the
University.
If you are clearing an area, moving out, moving in, or for whatever reason
have a lot of waste to get rid of in one go, you need to arrange disposal
in a way that does not involve dumping it in a public area or in someone
else's skip.
Contractor's have also been warned to ensure any waste is put straight
into a skip (their own) or not brought out at all, and have cleared away
accumulated waste a number of times already (some of it not theirs either)
but we need to ensure we are all acting responsibly.
It is particularly important coming up to degree award ceremonies that
we try and keep what is left of the campus (i.e. what is not a building
site) looking as tidy as possible.
Laboratory Glass
If you have regular laboratory glass for disposal we are making arrangements
for disposal via Chem-waste. This glass should not go into recycling stream
but be disposed of as hazardous glass. If you have regular service needed
let me know locations and quantities and I will let Chem waste know so
arrangements for this to be included in a weekly service. They are coming
in next week to discuss this.

Janet Russell - Folk Singer - free performance
Wednesday 23 November at 12.15pm
Janet Russell - Folk Singer
Richmond Foyer, Free
Janet Russell has performed on the folk and festival circuit since the
eighties, and is known for her fine interpretations of Scottish traditional
song, but also contemporary song with a social message, of which she has
written several herself, such as the popular "Secretary's Song"
and "Breastfeeding Baby in the Park". Janet also facilitates
vocal harmony workshops. She works regularly with three community choirs,
and guests with several others round the north of England.
"The most striking feature of Janet Russell's arresting voice
is a lower register whose distinctive power and edge make dramatic listening"

Motion Loco at Theatre in the Mill
Friday 25th and Saturday 26th November at 7.30pm
Motion Loco
Me and the King
Tickets £6.50/£4.00 concs
A brand-new show from the company that brought you the critically acclaimed
"Syd and Fanny's Christmas Turkey"
Do you remember what you were doing the day Elvis died?
Harry Smith Jones doesn't, in fact he doesn't remember much at all. On
16th August 1977, he awoke in the branches of a tree with no recollection
of who he was or how he got there.
This is the tragi-comic tale of Harry's quest to find an identity as
he moves into a new flat and opens the door to an extraordinary world
of ghosts, social clubs and an unhealthy obsession with the King of Rock
'n' Roll.
In this visually striking piece, Motion Loco combine magical comedy,
eccentric characterisation, slick physical performance and an array of
Elvis numbers sung live to make Me & The King a truly theatrical experience.
Suitable for 14 years upwards. Book on ext: 3200 or email: theatre@bradford.ac.uk

Royal Institute of Philosophy Lecture this week
'Nietzsche on the Death of God'
23 November at 4pm in Mezz 2, Graduate School.
The speaker is Ken Gemes, of Birkbeck College, London.
Synopsis
For Nietzsche understanding the death of God means not simply giving
up certain ontological beliefs, for instance, that there is a supreme
creator. It involves the realization that our morality, our way of life,
is without any external grounding. Once we truly face the death of God
we are left with two possibilities: (1) we give up all possibility of
any grounding and fall into Nihilism - what Nietzsche projected as the
future of Europe for the next two hundred years; or (2) we provide our
own individual groundings for our own individual values
