New. Supplementary Assessment at the Final Stage (Including Postgraduate Programmes)

The Senate at its meeting in June 2004 has approved a change to the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Regulations relating to the provision of supplementary assessment at the final stage.

Although this will not come into effect until the 2004/05 academic year, the Senate requested that Departments be encouraged to follow agreed custom and practice during the 2003/04 session to ensure that as many students as possible be given the earliest opportunity to graduate.

Further information is available on the ASSU website at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/assu/memonotifysuppassfinalyear.doc (word document)

New. Student graduation and the award of Ordinary Degree

The Senate has issued clarification regarding students on Honours Degree programmes who, following the Finals Board of Examiners, are permitted to undertake supplementary assessment (either in up to 20 credits and/or as a first attempt in any number of credits), with a view to obtaining a classified honours degree.

With effect from the 2003/04 academic session, it will be possible to award an Ordinary Degree to such students, providing they meet the criteria for this award, to enable them to graduate in July with their peers.

Further information is available on theASSU website at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/assu/memonotifyordtograduate.doc (word document)

New. Postgraduate Priorities Research

Research has been conducted with undergraduates and postgraduates across 11 universities, looking specifically at why postgraduate qualifications are undertaken, and how valued they are.

A full copy of the results, and an executive summary is now available on the market research section of the Corporate Communications website at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/market-research/.

An action plan will now be developed to address issues highlighted in the research, and ensure that the University is responding to changing postgraduate student needs.

If you have any questions or comments with regards to the research or the development of the action plan, please contact Joanne Clarkson at j.n.clarkson@bradford.ac.uk, or extension 6542, who will be happy to advise.

New. Landscape Or Still Life?
Paintings By John Blenkinsopp

Gallery II, University Of Bradford
18 June Until 23 July, 2004

A new exhibition of paintings by Principal Research Fellow at the University of Bradford, John Blenkinsopp, is to raise money for a memorial fund following the tragic death of one of John's colleagues.

John's original plan for his exhibition of work was to look in some depth at the similarities between landscape and still life painting. However, the tragic and untimely death of his colleague Dr Tudor Evans has prompted John to produce some works that would be commercially viable and would help contribute to a memorial fund started in Dr Evans memory.

Consequently, all profits from this show will be donated to the Tudor Evans Memorial Fund, which will help to provide an annual prize of study books for students. The paintings, produced especially for this exhibition, do explore the boundaries of still life and landscape. The landscapes have been kept free of human and animal figures. They are, in essence, an arrangement of inanimate objects and plants . . . which, in turn, could be a description of still life.

Entrance to the Gallery is free

New. Nursery Summer Club

The nursery runs a Summer Club for 5 to 11 year old children who have associations with the University. We have been taking bookings for this year's scheme for the past month. Unfortunately these bookings are well down on previous years. So we are appealing to those of you who need child care for the first 4 weeks of the school holidays to get in touch with us on ext 4866.

If the numbers do not rise significantly then we will have no option but to cancel this years scheme and reimburse the parents who have already paid the fees in advance.

Thank You

Margaret Mitchell
Head of Nursery Services
