BriefingIn July it will be the ten year anniversary of the Bradford Riots. The city has come a long way since 2001 and the University is proud to have played an important role in supporting Bradford’s communities, bringing together people from all walks of life and encouraging dialogue between communities and faiths. Many of our academics and staff have worked in this area and the University’s Programme for a Peaceful City and Faith in the City lectures have been particular highlights of this work.
The anniversary of this event will bring a lot of media interest and many journalists have already carried out research in preparation for releasing articles in the run up to the anniversary. The University’s press office function is working very closely with Bradford Council, West Yorkshire Police and partners of the Bradford District Communications Group on a communications strategy. The strategy aims to minimise the impact of this media interest and ensure through examples of the strengths of Bradford and its communities that the media are able to report a true picture of the city.
Should you get any calls from the media on this matter, please get in touch with the Press Office on 01274 233089.
No. 19. Remember Eva Smith: the Inspector’s Russian Journey.
You may have heard of J.B. Priestley’s greatest play, An Inspector calls, but did you know it was first seen in the USSR in 1945? This wonderful poster and photo album tell the story.

Blackboard will be upgraded to v9.1 during the week beginning 25 July and is likely to be unavailable for part of this week. It would be helpful if staff could email the codes and titles of modules that will be running over this period to VLEenhancement@bradford.ac.uk.
Staff office PCs supported by LSS will begin to move to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 from January 2012 onwards. Staff in IT Services will work closely with departments to arrange for the upgrades to happen, and the IT Trainers will provide training to staff at the time they move across. All LSS-maintained student cluster PCs will be updated with the new software between 29 August and 2 September.

Born in Bradford is a study of 13,500 families with new babies in Bradford. As the babies in the study grow it will be possible to identify those things that help them stay healthy and those things that are challenges to good health. Knowing these things will help to improve health in the city.
With infant mortality (deaths in the first year of life) greatly higher in Bradford than the average for the country as a whole it is essential for our communities to understand why and use what we learn to help plan ways to improve health for people in Bradford and elsewhere.
This lecture will take place on Wednesday 29 June from 6pm-7.30pm at the JSB Lecture Theatre, Richmond Building, University of Bradford.
Please book your place by emailing community@bradford.ac.uk or calling 01274 236772. Please note that places are free, but are limited.
