New courses from the Staff Development Unit

Coaching Skills

  • Course 1 - Monday and Tuesday, 13 & 14 January 2003
  • Course 2 - Tuesday and Wednesday, 1 & 2 April, 2003
  • Times: 2 full days for each course
  • Tutors: Janet Jones, assisted by Pete Sayers and Alan Cattell

Coaching Skills is a staff development course for anyone who manages staff within the University. Coaching is the term used in management development to describe an approach that managers take to the ongoing development of their staff. It rests on the presupposition that a key role for managers is to develop the staff for whom they are responsible, and that, a bit like a sports coach, they take an active interest in helping their people improve their performance.

Unlike the traditional image of a sports coach, they don't do this by shouting at them from the sidelines, but by talking through performance issues in a way that helps people identify what they need to do next to develop and improve their skills and knowledge. There are techniques and insights that enable managers to be more effective coaches, and this is what our coaching skills course will reveal and work with. By developing others, managers will also develop themselves, of course.

The Coaching Skills will build on the learning from Appraisal training, and other staff development courses run by the University. We look forward to seeing you on one of the two courses we have arranged for the beginning of 2003

Places still available on the following courses
