Open Day thanks
A huge thanks to everyone involved in the Open Day - it was a great success despite the weather and a total of 426 potential students and guests visited on the day.
One comment we've received so far from a potential student was very positive:
"I am just writing to let you know how wonderful I thought the School of Health was today. The student nurse who showed us round was so helpful I am now confident enough to say that a career in adult nursing is definitely the right career pathway for me and I am looking forward to applying in autumn 2006."
Plans are already shaping up for July 2006 - watch this space . . .

Environment Levy Fund invites bids from travel projects
The annual award of environmental levy fund is drawing near and Estates & Facilities are inviting bids from projects which aim to reduce staff and student dependence on car travel as a mode of commuting to work and study. Small grants (typically in the region of £1,000) are available to part fund travel related projects. Any Academic School, Department and Student Organisation of the University of Bradford can apply to the fund.
Applications for funding must be made by 27th of March 2006. Further

Supporting Learner Development
As part of an investigation into supporting learner development at the University, we want to obtain a complete picture of all the different types of support we currently provide for our students. We are interested in any skills development activity that you provide to enhance the learning experience for your students. We are interested only in activities that are additional and separate from those undertaken as part of a credit bearing module or course of study.
- Specifically we are interested in:
- When the event/s run/s
- Whether it is a one off or part of a wider programme
- Where you are located
- What your job title is
- If the provision is voluntary or compulsory
- Reaction of students and their feedback i.e. do they enjoy it!
- Anything else you want to add.

Nobel Peace Laureate - Prestige Lecture (invitation)
We are delighted to announce that Mairead Corrigan McGuire, Nobel Peace Laureate,has agreed to give a public lecture at the University of Bradford on Friday, 24 March 2006. Mairead Corrigan McGuire was awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Betty Williams, as co-Founders of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People).
The public lecture, which will discuss global peace issues in the world today, has been organised by the University’s internationally-renowned Department of Peace Studies and is part of PeaceJam, an international education programme built around Nobel Peace Laureates who work personally with young people to pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody. This is the second in a series of prestige lectures in the University’s 40th anniversary year.
You are cordially invited to join us for this free prestige lecture in the John Stanley Bell Lecture Theatre, Richmond Building which will begin at 5pm. Light refreshments will be served in the adjacent D floor foyer area from 4.30pm.

Changes to supported email software
As many of you will be aware, Execmail and Eudora will be removed from service in the Easter period. All staff who require support for their email access, will need to move over to Outlook for managing their electronic mail, or can just use the web-based 'Webmail' if they prefer.
Several sessions are being run to assist staff in moving over to the new interface to mail - see the web link below for more details and to book a place, http://www.brad.ac.uk/dev-prog/it/index.php?course=ol3-t
LSS staff will also be available to help staff move folders and addressbooks to Outlook if required; please ring 3333 to arrange a suitable date and time if you need this support. We appreciate your assistance in moving away from Execmail and Eudora as both packages are generating support problems.
HCI Window Opens: Roadshows on Wednesday and Thursday
For staff wishing to purchase a home computer through the Home Computer Initiative there are roadshows this week where some of the available systems will be on display.
From 10am until 4pm on Wednesday 15th March representatives of Phoenix and the Computer Centre will be in the Richmond Building foyer.
From 10am until 12.30pm on Thursday they will be at the School of Management, in the foyer of the Emm Lane Building and then at the School of Health foyer between 2pm and 4.30pm.

Conference Telephones
School/Departmental requests to Voice Communications for loan conference telephones have been on the increase for some time now. In response to this increase in demand, we have now purchased a number of audio conferencing units that can be connected to any standard analogue telephone line. These can be used by up to six people with a recommended conference seating area of 3M X 4.5M. The units are available for hire from Voice Communications at a rate of £3 per day.

Race for Life
Would you like to take part in the Race For Life? Its a national event taking part all over the country on different dates to raise money for Cancer Research? See: http://www.raceforlife.org (external link, will open in a new window)
This 5k run/jog is a women only event and here at the sports centre we are setting up a training programme for anyone who wants to take part. The date for the event is June 4th in Bradford. Ring the sports centre office and leave your contact details, or email sports@bradford.ac.uk We may even enter a University team as part of the University's 40th anniversary celebrations if there is enough interest!

Learning Luncheons and Teatime tutorials, back by popular demand
Metalib
Another chance this term to attend one of the popular Metalib training sessions. The Library will be offering two further Teatime Tutorial sessions on the following dates

- 22nd March
Both sessions commence at 18:00 and finish at 19:30 in Room 01.53, J.B. Priestley Building.
All UoB students and staff are welcome to come and hear about Metalib - the Library portal - and how to use it. The session will include a demo and a hands-on task. Tea and biscuits will be available - or you can bring your sandwiches along.

Works on Campus
Temporary Closure of Richmond Road (reminder and clarification)
To facilitate safe delivery, offloading, storage, assembly and erection of the roof trusses for the new Atrium, Richmond Road will be closed from Great Horton Road down to the Main Richmond Building Entrance for the period 27 March to 23 June 2006.
Diversion will be via Gt Horton Road, Shearbridge Road, Listerhills Road and Richmond Road and will be sign posted.
Access to the Main Entrance will be up Richmond Road from Longside Lane, the short one way stretch adjacent to the Entrance will be two way. Pedestrian diversions around the compound will be fenced and sign posted. Would relevant staff please inform suppliers in advance. The remaining half of Horton A Car Park will also be unavailable.

Horton D Building Level 5, Laboratory Wing
Alterations and refurbishment to form the Mobile Satellite Communications Research Centre. These works will commence on Monday 13th March 2006 and will be completed by Friday 19th May 2006.
Should you have any queries regarding the work, please direct them to Mr Andrew Hague, on extension 5020.
School of Management
Necessary felling of dangerous trees and other tree works adjacent "cleaner's path" and Heaton Mound drive. Please observe safety signage and barriers. The car parking areas adjacent to the lower drive should not be used during the works. It is anticipated that the works will commence on Monday 13th March 2006 and will be completed in two weeks after that date.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused during these improvement works.

Car Parking reminder
Staff are advised that with effect from Monday 13th March 2006, the car park area between Richmond Building and the Workshop block will be designated for contractors authorised vehicles only. This is to free up car park spaces that contractors use elsewhere on the campus and thus restrict the number of spaces available to them.

Royal Institute of Philosophy talk this week
Knowledge of Language. The speaker is John Collins (UEA). Date: Wednesday 15 March at 4pm. Location: Graduate School. Mezz 2.
Synopsis: In this talk, I suggest, contrary to the popular view among philosophers, that generative linguistics has no commitment to 'knowledge of language', as that phrase is often understood. I argue that linguistic theories make no essential appeal to 'knowledge' and that this has been a long-standing aspect of Chomsky's work.
