A new Vision for Further and Higher Education, from Chris Taylor, Vice-Chancellor

In recent years the College and the University have been working in ever closer collaboration to the benefit of both institutions. We have recently prepared a Vision paper to help us shape the future development of the two institutions and wished to share it with you at the earliest opportunity. We have also prepared a press release for the media which will be sent out late on Monday. The next step, in the coming weeks, is for the two institutions to prepare a proposal to the appropriate funding bodies to seek endorsement for a feasibility study to explore how we might give the Vision form. We believe that there are at this time exciting opportunities for what could be a unique model for further and higher education in the UK.

We will hope not only to keep you regularly updated on the progress but will seek your active involvement in shaping our thinking.

Full details are available on the web from www.brad.ac.uk/news/private/higher.htm or contact your Head of Department for a paper copy.

Of interest to all academic staff and those involved in research administration

The University now has a new Research and Innovation Strategy which can be found at the following web address www.brad.ac.uk/admin/planning/Research/Res&InnovFINAL.PDF (pdf file).

Senate on October 10th approved the new strategy which sets out how the University will continue to develop its research over the next few years, including setting targets for future Research Assessment Exercises (RAE). It's the first time that we have approached our research strategy in this way and any feedback or comments on the document will be particularly welcomed particularly as it is to be reviewed at the end of this year to see how it is going.

Please e-mail or post comments to Professor Mark Pollard, Director of Research, email: a.m.pollard@bradford.ac.uk.

New Catering Service Guidelines, from Bob Booth, Catering Manager

(click here for a printable word memo from Catering)

As a catering department, we always endeavour to provide the highest quality service and to react positively and rapidly to customer's requests. We are, however, encountering major operational problems. Examples are listed below:

a) Short notice given for forthcoming functions. On previous documents it has been stated that information be given TWO days before the event. This is the LEAST notice required, not the standard or the earliest.

b) Problems are also arising with access to departments, and equipment not being retrieved following a function, resulting in loss of equipment e.g. cups, saucers, presentation flats etc.

We therefore are intending to streamline our procedures, however for this we will require support and co-operation from our customers.

New Guidelines

The notice required for functions (when large numbers are involved, or where food needs preparing), this must be a MINIMUM of FIVE working days, although amendments can be made up to 24 hours before.

Notice for beverage only functions, must be a MINIMUM of TWO days. Amendments can be made up to the day of the function. We will endeavour to cater for genuine emergency late functions, but cannot guarantee, it is at the discretion of the catering management.

We are also amending the booking forms to allow more information to be given, and to facilitate budgets and costs, with this information being returned to the customer.

The menu's are to be reviewed, with both selection and costs updated. We will also formalise the position on missing or lost equipment; e.g. all unaccounted for equipment will be charged to the cost centre/department code, (charges available, on request).

There will also be a 10% surcharge on food and beverage functions below 10 covers.

All functions after 5pm, (Monday to Friday), or at weekend are liable for labour costs, (rates on request).

Comments or queries please contact the catering department on ext: 4901.
