BriefingSome of you may have read this weekend's Sunday Times which featured a story on ratios of academic to non-academic staff at UK Universities in which we were cited.
The way in which universities categorise staff varies considerably across the sector. Here at Bradford, the student experience depends on the expertise of many staff who may not automatically be classified in the returns as academic. Nevertheless over half of our staff costs are for academic posts.
The overall staff to student ratio at Bradford, which is a key factor in a good student experience, is above the national average of all current league tables. Our focus is on student success and providing the right environment for them to learn in. Staff in laboratories, the library, counselling services and other areas are all part of that experience.
The Sunday Times also incorrectly reported that we had already announced our fee level for 2011/12. Our fee level has not been announced and will be discussed at the next meeting of University Council on Friday (15 April).
Amendments to the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations came into effect on 6 April 2011. This means that there will be no default retirement age in the UK. The only exception will be for staff who are due to reach retirement age on or before 30 September 2011 and have been notified of their impending retirement on or before 30 March 2011.

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Kazimierz Lewalski from the University's security team who died last week. Known to most colleagues as Kaz, he had worked at the University for over 20 years and was an extremely well liked and valued member of the team. Details of funeral and memorial arrangements will be provided once available.

The next meeting of the Staff Assembly will be held on Wednesday 13 April at 1pm in the John Stanley Bell Lecture Theatre. All members of staff at the University are invited to attend.

The University Web Team would like to announce the launch of the new external website for the University. Users off-campus see this website when they access our website: www.bradford.ac.uk
User on-campus can get to the link by typing: www.bradford.ac.uk/external into their browser or using the 'External home page' link in the top right of the internal home page.
The site is aimed at prospective students, their influencers, prospective researchers, people who may wish to work at the University and anyone wishing to find out generally about the University. It follows on from two more recent projects - sites specifically for prospective undergraduate students and prospective postgraduate and research students.
We hope that you and any external users you communicate with find the site useful and informative and we are always looking at ways to improve the university's online presence generally. Our next big project will be to improve the online presence of Research and Knowledge Transfer at Bradford.
Comments and suggestions always welcome, email: web@bradford.ac.uk
The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) is now live and we invite all staff who have contact with postgraduate taught students to encourage them to fill it in as soon as possible.
The PTES is a national survey which the University will use as an internal benchmark to monitor and review how well it is doing in terms of the post graduate taught student experience. Resources to use in lectures to promote the survey are also available on the website.
The survey closes 31 May 2011.
Due to bank and customary University holidays, the Counselling Service will be closed on a number of days between 18 April and 3 May. There will be no drop-in sessions during this time.

The Diversity and Inclusion in Learning Teaching and Assessment (DILTA) group of the University is holding a half-day event on 6 May at 12.30pm for all university teaching staff. The workshop will investigate issues of inclusion and diversity that are of increasing relevance to university staff. There will be two short presentations about inclusion and diversity in the university setting: one focused on policy and the other on pedagogic issues.
The remainder of the session will be devoted to exploring current good practice in inclusive learning, teaching, and assessment through a number of case studies. Participants are encouraged to share practice from their own discipline areas and to discuss both the current barriers to adopting a truly inclusive teaching practice and ways to overcome these barriers.
Further details to follow.
