New. Are you wasting water?

May is the University's first Water Efficiency month and in conjunction with Yorkshire Water we are giving away 250 free sava-a-flush devices.

By placing the sava-a-flush bag in your home toilet cistern you will save 1 litre of water each time you flush. The sava-a-flush also comes with a handy water saving planner to help you further save water in your home.

Did you know that a third of an average family's water use is flushed down the toilet everyday - this is equivalent to two baths of water!

To receive your free sava-a-flush cistern bag e-mail our Environment Manager, Jaime Sullivan, at environment@bradford.ac.uk with your name and works address.

Are you doing your bit for the environment?

New. New grant to help support your ideas to improve the environment

If you have a project, which helps protect the environment by reducing staff or student dependence on the car or helps promote other forms of transport then you could be eligible for a grant from the Universities Environmental Levy Fund.

Perhaps you would like cycle shelters near your building, to train your essential car users on improved driving techniques, to set up a system for home working or to improve access information for visitors to your site.

Any School, Department or Student Organisation can apply to the Environmental Levy Fund.

The grant money has been raised through the environmental levy on car parking. The fund has limited resources so all applications will be considered and decided upon by the Universities Environmental Strategy Group.

The closing date for applications to the fund is 25th June 2004.

For further information e-mail Jaime Sullivan, Environment Manager, with your contact details to environment@bradford.ac.uk

New. Full Economic Costing (fEC) of Research Projects and Other Activities

The Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE) and the Government have been concerned for some time that institutions are consistently not recovering the total true cost of research and other activities from sponsors, in terms of the 'price' that is charged. Evidence at a sector level, indicates that universities are generally cross-subsidising expenditure against research activities from teaching income.

Given the above, HEFCE have recently issued detailed costing guidance to institutions to allow them to arrive at the full economic cost (fEC) for research and other activities at a project level. Once enacted this should allow institutions to manage research (and other projects) on a fEC basis from various sponsors. Specifically, universities will be required to apply this methodology on applications to research councils from September 2005.

The costing guidance will be implemented and disseminated over the remainder of this calendar year following further advice from HEFCE. Appropriate training for academic and support staff will be arranged towards the end of 2004.

Should you require any additional information in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact Tara Singh Bhogal (3139 or via T.S.Bhogal@bradford.ac.uk) or Keith Waddingham (3132 or via K.Waddingham@bradford.ac.uk).

Annual Review of the CARP 2003/04 Reminder.

The Annual Review of the Work of the Course Approval and Review Panel (CARP) will take place on Friday 14th May 2004 and will be held in Room 01.58 in the JB Priestley library from 12 noon until 4.30pm.

All principal and alternate members of an Annual Monitoring Team or a Course Approval and Review Team are invited to attend.

The review is intended to be a reflective event providing the opportunity for members to comment on how things have gone this year - what has gone well and what hasn't worked so well. We aim to share good practice among members and, if appropriate after full discussion, to bring forward suggestions for changes to policy or procedure for consideration by the Academic Policy Committee.

Feedback last year indicated that the 2 hour event did not allow sufficient time for full discussion of all the issues that came up, so in response the meeting this year will commence at 12noon and finish at 4.30pm.

The event is intended to be informal - so if you're unable to attend for the full session please feel free to turn up when you can and join one of the groups.

If you would like to attend this session please email tqe-sec@bradford.ac.uk to reserve a place.
