BANG! (British Asian New Generation) is a competition to search for Northern
writers who can write in an engaging way about the British Asian
experience. The competition is open to all writers in the North of England
and submissions will be welcomed from anyone, whatever their experience.
The submitted work must be un-published and un-performed and we also ask
that it is written in English.
For those who wish to participate, but would like some help to get started, free Writing Workshops are being offered following the launch of the competition. They will be held at various venues throughout the North between 6 October and 13 October 2006.

Hoof! is the most thrilling, truly live theatre in the UK. A bare stage transforms into a visual, verbal and musical feast as five physical performers and a musician catapult the audience into a totally improvised world. Hoof! is not improv games but an entire play improvised quite literally on the Hoof!
This is an astonishing theatre event: five of the country’s finest comic inventors and a musical virtuoso step out onto a bare stage armed with only an array of instruments and their collective imagination with which to create an entirely original piece of narrative theatre. No conferring, no hesitation and no audience prompts – each play is performed quite literally on the Hoof!

Wednesday 11 October, 4 - 6pm in E1 (E-floor, Richmond Building); Andrew Sayer, professor of sociology at the University of Lancaster, will speak about The Moral Significance of Class.
Synopsis: While inequalities based on gender, race, sexuality and disability are increasingly seen as unacceptable, as is evident in equal opportunities policies, inequalities of class are either denied or increasingly treated as natural rather than as a problematic product of the way society is currently organised. Contemporary culture is both obsessed with class and in denial of it; it is very much the subject of soap operas, comedy and 'reality TV' but is rarely identified by name. The common evasiveness, embarrassment and unease about class indicate glimmers of recognition of its basic injustice and the harm that it causes. I shall argue class inequalities cause: 1) not only unequal access to resources and opportunities for living well, but to unfairly unequal recognition, dignity, respect and esteem; 2) mistaken valuations of lifestyles, self and others, including unwarranted shame, guilt and pride; and 3) harm to individuals' characters.
