The first edition of the all-new Training Prospectus for both Bradford College and University of Bradford staff is now available!
The prospectus includes training events in Health and Safety, Research, Teaching and Learning, Information Technology and Professional and Personal Development. Most events are open to staff in both institutions, with just a few that are specific to the providing institution only. Compared to previous years, it will offer more opportunities for development and easy access to all training opportunities.
Events can be viewed and booked on-line. Links to the site are available in the University from the Computer Centre, Teaching Quality Enhancement and the Staff Development Unit web sites. For a direct link to the site please go to: www.staffdev.bilk.ac.uk
A paper copy of this Training Prospectus will be forwarded to all staff during w/c 8 September. If you do not receive a booklet by 19 September, please let us know by e-mailing: staffdev@bradford.ac.uk or calling us on extension 3102.
The rationale for this venture is explained in the introduction to the booklet.
The School of Lifelong Education and Development offers a range of IT modules for beginners and more advanced users. You can get to grips with the basics through our IT Skills 1 module, or build on basic skills with IT Skills 2 from Semester 2 (Spreadsheets, Databases and PowerPoint). We are also running more advanced modules in Databases and website development. In an Introduction to Designing and Developing a Website you can choose to use either Microsoft's web authoring tool FrontPage or Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX.
The modules are run largely in the evenings and weekends so are ideal for those that can't fit their learning in 9am-5pm. Though if you need IT skills for your job, then your manager should be ensuring sufficient time is allocated during the working day for you to develop these.
More information about IT Modules http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/conted/cfa/it.html SLED also has a wide range of other modules to choose from.
You can get the full list from http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/conted/cfa/.
Alternatively, get in touch with Cath Dyson on 6095, or c.dyson1@bradford.ac.uk for further information on IT modules or 3210 for general enquiries.

As you may be aware, this is an important year for the development of the new University of Bradford Student Smart Card.
All students who return in September that do not carry the new student card will be issued one on Monday 22 September at Re-Enrolment. This new card will allow students to carry funds to pay meals from University of Bradford Catering outlets, will be used for access control to UoB Halls of Residences and eventually for access to other buildings and print/copy facilities in the JB Priestley Building. This card will carry the student's UB number that remains the same.
For security purposes, however, the card will have a new issue number and the student's old card will become invalid on the morning of Monday 22 September. They will not be able to enter the Library with their old card from this date or renew their books both in person and on-line/via telephone.s
To this end, please be aware of the importance of this new card. There will be no students carrying a valid old style two-part paper card apart from a small number of students who are writing up.
Students will not be able to access Library/Computer Centre facilities if they are not carrying the new card.
For further details contact Simon Croll, Student Registry on s.n.croll@bradford.ac.uk or 6540

Know of any good causes?
Electronic Imaging and Media Communication students are again about to choose their final year projects, if they haven't already over summer. Where do you come in? Well, those students who haven't decided what to do yet are likely to be desperate to find an appropriate project to get their teeth into. Students work in a range of formats for these projects, including video (up to 10 minutes long), web sites, computer animation, printed brochures, cd-roms, mixed media branding campaigns, etc - the list goes on.
So, if you know of a potential client who might be looking for a piece of work in one of the above formats, whether University based, or an external commercial or charitable organisation, please let me know. I can then post their details on our web page, and list it as a 'possible project'.
If you'd like to know more about the timescale and nature of the EIMC final year projects, please contact me on extension 5467, or e-mail m.l.goodliff@brad.ac.uk

Student Finance
If students are worried about their Student Loan or other funds arriving late please remember to direct them to Student Financial and Information Services. Please encourage your students to read their email, and look at our web site. We send Campus News to all students with an email address once a month. This contains information which will be useful to them.
The staff at SFIS are always happy to see students and can answer most of their questions. If we don't know the answer we will find out for them. If staff would like to come and see what we offer we are more than happy to meet you. We also have the Citizens Advice Bureau CD ROM which contains information on a very wide area of issues, which could save you a trip to the bureau. Staff are more than welcome to come and look up any area they choose. (please let us know when you are coming) If we can help, let us know.
