Launch of new 'Specialised Mailing Service'

The Specialised Mailing Service has replaced the service which many people called 'address-o-graph'. MIS is promoting the use of 'gold standard' data, and has taken this opportunity to create distribution lists based on University management information systems.

Staff with email accounts will receive messages this way, and a paper distribution service will be retained for those staff who don't yet have accounts. Over time, we hope to migrate as many people as possible to an email account.

The service was launched for the first time at the beginning of the year with the Staff Briefing sent to all staff on a weekly basis.

For full details of the service and the various lists that are now available, please see http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/pr/mailing/.

If you have further suggestions about how this service could be improved please contact mis-servicedesk@bradford.ac.uk or telephone ext: 3002.

Administrative/Professional Career Development Scheme 2001/2002 invitation to participate
Deadline for expressions of interest 22 October 2001

For the fourth year, we are inviting people to participate on the above Scheme. It provides a clear career development framework for secretarial/clerical/technician staff to progress to administrative/professional grades as an alternative to competitive graduate direct entry to an advertised post and is used by those who are interested in developing their careers and are willing to undertake roles with greater responsibility. Heads of Schools and Departments are also being asked for nominations to the Scheme for the year 2001/2002.

The Scheme involves planned, work-based experience, supplemented, where appropriate, by off-the-job training, to develop:

  • designated core competencies,
  • the particular competencies associated with the professional/specialist area in which individuals work (or want to progress to), and,
  • the acquisition of any relevant qualifications.

It is not itself an accredited course; it simply offers a supported route to acquiring the competencies which may lead to a post on administrative scales. Individuals on the Scheme will have access to support from a centrally designated mentor normally from outside their immediate work area. A central assessment panel will review individuals' progress and determine participants' readiness for progression to administrative/professional grades.

Copies of the Scheme are available from the Staff Development Unit (ext. 3069, email L.M.Noble@bradford.ac.uk), or on the website http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/staffdev/Careerdv/.

We would emphasise that the Scheme is intended to develop participants' administrative abilities and not to enable them to achieve a regrading within clerical or technician grades. The Scheme seeks to break the requirement to have a degree in order to be appointed to administrative posts. Nevertheless, this is the level of ability and above, ie postgraduate, which you will be required to achieve for administrative grading as these posts require a high level of initiative and responsibility with a low level of supervision and support. It may take two or three years to achieve this level of competence. If you have any queries about the scheme, please contact Lorna Noble, Staff Development Unit (ext. 3069).

If you are interested in participating on the Scheme, it is essential to read the Scheme and supporting documentation in detail and to discuss the position with your Head of School/Department before taking the matter further. Discussions need to cover the implications and possible outcomes for yourself and the department of your participation in the Scheme. Without the Head of School/Department's active support in providing development opportunities it will be extremely difficult to progress on the Scheme. Expressions of interest in participating on the scheme must be forwarded, in writing, to Lorna Noble, Staff Development Unit, Room E5 Richmond Building by Monday 22 October 2001. Final commitment to participation is required by 6 November.
