General University notices

New. Updates from Finance

Payments to individuals for work done

We have reviewed the way we make payments to individuals for work done. A payment will no longer be paid through the creditor section of Finance without evidence of self employed status. Payments without this evidence will be processed through the salaries and wages section.

This is to ensure that tax and national insurance is treated correctly.

Full guidance and how to proceed is available on request from T.J.Spencer@bradford.ac.uk extension 3128 or A.R.Sowerbutts@bradford.ac.uk extension 5049.

Payments to creditors before Christmas

The final processing date for payments to suppliers before Christmas will be Tuesday the 19th of December, please ensure all invoices are with the creditor team by this date, thank you.

Charities Aid Foundation donations/gift aid

To enable the Finance Office to allocate receipts from the Charities Aid Foundation, can anyone making a gift aid to the University prize accounts through the Foundation please keep Maxine Daglan-Smith informed on extension 5047. We have recently received a number of receipts and have been unable to allocate the funds to an account.

New. Community Engagement Events

Over 60 different communities, 1 University, 3 core themes - what draws them together? Community Engagement!

Find out more at these events:

Monday 11 December, 1 - 4pm, Norcroft Centre:
Community Engagement, Sustainability and the Ecoversity
As part of the Ecoversity Update, see displays and stalls and hear how we’re developing links with the local community to compliment the University’s plans for a sustainable campus. Further information to follow.

Tuesday 12 December, 4.00 - 5.30pm, Board Room, Richmond Building:
Wellbeing and Community Engagement - what’s it all about?
How can Wellbeing connect local communities with your work - adding interest and relevance, enriching the student experience and benefiting everyone? Find out more about how you’re (probably!) already doing this and how we can help you to develop it.

Wednesday 13 December, 4.00 - 5.30pm, Sanderson Room, Richmond Building:
Cohesion and Community Engagement - what does it mean?
Cohesion can be a controversial and confusing term which means different things to different people - so what does it mean in this HEI context? If you’re interested in issues of equality, diversity and how people get on with each other, then book your place.

To reserve a place on the 12 and 13 December events, please contact the Short Course Unit on ext 3217/3213 or email: scu@bradford.ac.uk

New. Adult Learners' Week 2007 - amendment to criteria for awards

Following last week's entry calling for nominations to the Adult Learners' Awards we have an update to the criteria.

Nominees don't have to be current students but they do have to have been a student here at the University between January 2005 and now, e.g. they may have graduated in July 2005/December 2005/July 2006.

Full details are at: http://www.bradford.ac.uk/news/alw-2007.htm

New. The Norcroft Centre

The Norcroft Centre can now be booked as a University resource for events primarily of a prestigious nature, eg research showcases and conferences, public lectures, and international, national, regional and City meetings. Essentially, the Centre is available for non-standard University events and all booking enquiries will currently be considered according to this criterion by a senior University panel. The space will be free of charge for internally-led events, however there will be charges at cost for services such as portering, AV support, etc.

The Short Course Unit has the task of co-ordinating bookings at the venue. An on-line booking enquiry form for internally-led events can be found at www.brad.ac.uk/sled/norcroft.html A short description of the venue is also available here. The booking form should be returned by e-mail attachment to scu@bradford.ac.uk

Please be aware that the booking may not be confirmed immediately as the details will be put forward for consideration and acceptance.

NB for a short period of time the Norcroft Centre may be used to accommodate certain events displaced by the refurbishment of the D Floor meeting room accommodation including the JSB lecture theatre - again the nature of the events will be considered. This may mean there is limited availability in the Norcroft Centre during May, June and July (according to current plans), so please consider holding your event out of this time-frame if at all possible.

The launch of the Centre is expected to take place in April next year as there are further internal works to be completed. Please note that these works may also impact on bookings acceptance.

If you have any queries please direct them to scu@bradford.ac.uk

New. The Sexual Orientation Group is looking for a new name

We are a group of people who want to raise awareness of sexual orientation in the University. We welcome gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and all people who are interested in or affected by issues of sexual orientation. We meet regularly for coffee at the Jazzman café at 11.00am on the first Monday of the month, and more formally on January 25th at 1.00pm with lunch provided. The joint Chairs sit on the Equality and Diversity Committee and can raise any problems or issues.

We would like a more interesting name than S.O.G.! Suggestions so far include ‘Triangle’ (a reference to the system of coloured triangles used during the holocaust) or simply ‘The Staff and Student Sexual Orientation Group’. Please suggest another name, or let us know which you prefer!

The group can be contacted through Ian Burkitt (i.burkitt@bradford.ac.uk) or Clare Beckett (C.Beckett@bradford.ac.uk) joint chairs.
