Placement Year

Archaeology and Archaeological Sciences

Rob Street during excavation

Students in Archaeological Sciences can spend a whole year working for archaeological organisations in the UK or overseas gaining valuable work experience if they are registered on a four-year (sandwich) course.

There are work placements in the areas of field excavation and survey, archaeological illustration and geophysics, aerial survey, sites and monuments work, cultural heritage management, education and archaeology, forensic studies and biological anthropology, post-excavation analysis and a wide variety of laboratory work.

During their placement year, students may work for more than one organisation, including museums, archaeological field units in the private and public sectors, research laboratories, local councils and government departments. Placement students have recently worked in universities in Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United States of America.

Students on a four-year course spend their first two years studying at the University before having a year in work, ideally as a full-time, paid employee of an organisation providing a placement or internship. After completing their placement year, the students return to Bradford for a fourth and final year of academic study at the University. Successful completion of the placement year leads to a Diploma in Professional Archaeological Studies. Our students report very favourably on their placement experience:
