Kevin Gaskell, former managing director of BMW (GB), is now chief executive officer (Europe) of CarsDirect.com, the world's biggest Internet car retailing business. He was an undergraduate in Civil and Structural Engineering in 1977-81; and studied for an MBA at the Management centre from 1982-83.
"Bradford was a friendly place with lots of facilities," he said. "The course was intensive with a good mix of practical and academic work."
Mr Gaskell, originally from Cheshire, grew up in North Wales. He met his wife, Penny, from Hull, at the University, where she graduated from the Pharmacy Department.
After gaining his first degree, Mr Gaskell was offered a scholarship to complete an MBA. After leaving Bradford, he moved into the chemical industry where he spent five years as an accountant. In 1987 he joined Porsche Cars Great Britain Limited and in 1992, at the age of 33, was appointed managing director. He joined BMW in 1996 as managing director with responsibility for all sales and distribution operations leaving in February, this year, to take up his current role.
Having played representative cricket at an international level, he now enjoys clay pigeon shooting for relaxation. In 1998, to celebrate his fortieth birthday, he spent four weeks climbing Mount Everest.
