September 1999

New Director of Continuing Education appointed
Geoff Layer is appointed as the Director of Continuing Education and Professor of Lifelong Learning.

New Finance Director appointed
Geoff Hope-Terry, the new Finance Director, set out his aims for the future.

Geoff, who worked in a similar role for Bradford Training and Enterprise Council, emphasised how he hoped to support the forward thinking and positive ideas of the new Vice-Chancellor and heads of planning units.

JobShop launched
The University opens a JobShop for employers needing temporary or part-time help.

The JobShop keeps a database of students looking for work and helps local employers find suitable candidates.

October 1999

Collaboration not competition
The University and Bradford College make a successful bid to HEFCE's restructuring and collaboration programme to "explore further collaborative appointments that will benefit not only two institutions but students and the wider community".

The resultant "Collaboration Project" will investigate the potential for closer links in all areas of activity, including academic provision, support services and infrastructure.

 

Chancellor honoured
Baroness Lockwood (pictured above), Chancellor of Bradford University, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Leeds Metropolitan University.

Increased graduate employment rates
Latest figures show 79% of 1998 graduates had found work by the end of the year.

The percentage of students unemployed fell from 6.1% to 5.1% compared to the previous year and 12.7% of students went on to further study, compared to 11.2% in the previous year.

Honorary Graduate Accepts Peerage
Diana Warwick (pictured above with Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Bell), who holds an honorary doctorate from the University, accepted a life peerage and the Labour Whip

November 1999

War on Cancer merges
Bradford War on Cancer merged with one of the country's most well-known cancer charities, Cancer Research Campaign.

The merger meant that War on Cancer would retain a separate identity, and ensured the cancer research of the Clinical Oncology Unit for the foreseeable future.

December 1999

University honours
The University awarded five honorary doctorates in the December graduation ceremony.

Those receiving the honour were Jeremy Paxman, Sir John Birt, Peter Sallis, Dr Paul Gallagher, and Zahida Manzoor. (Click here)

Health excellence
The University scored a national first when two areas were awarded 23 out of 24 in the Government's assessment of teaching excellence.

The Quality Assurance Agency looked at the School of Health Studies, together with the Department of Optometry. (Click here)

January 2000

Big business partnership pays off
The University played a leading role in establishing the Yorkshire and Humberside Universities' Association, which secured more than £2 million in European funding.

The funding will benefit small and medium-sized enterprises throughout the Yorkshire and Humber regions.

February 2000

Vice-Chancellor's speech
The University's Vice-Chancellor reviewed achievements and looked forward to the future in his speech to staff.

Prof Colin Bell said: "The key word is 'quality' - we have to be quality-driven. How else would we like to describe ourselves? Keywords might be: confident, responsive, friendly, encouraging, positive, effective, realistic and realisable, developing, innovative, accountable and holistic. We see the bigger picture. We are confederal and collaborative, environmentally conscious and 'Confronting Inequality and Celebrating Diversity'."
