Double
Award Winner
Professor Peter York's tremendous
contribution to the pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy has been recognised
with two major research awards within a year.
In November last year, Peter
was presented with the highly prestigious "Research Award for Particulate
Preparations and Design" by the Society of Powder Technology in Japan
at the 20th International Symposium.
Not content with receiving
one major international award in a year, Peter has now been presented
with a "Research Achievement Award" at the 2nd Pharmaceutical Sciences
World Congress in Kyoto, Japan.
Peter was nominated by the
APSGB (Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Great Britain) - one of the
sponsoring organisations of the Congress.
Peter focuses his research
on molecular pharmaceutics and drug development which involves defining
the molecular structure of pharmaceutical materials.
This information is then used
to predict the properties and processing characteristics of pharmacologically
active compounds in relation to the design of new drug delivery systems.
As a bi-product of his work
Peter was instrumental in setting up the highly successful University
spin-out company Bradford Particle Design (now Nektar Therapeutics).
Commenting on the award, Peter
said: "It is especially encouraging to receive international recognition
for our research work at Bradford in crystal engineering, molecular pharmaceutics
and drug delivery.
"In addition, in receiving
these awards the importance of these subjects in directing the transformation
of drug substances into medicines is being widely acknowledged, which
adds strength and vitality to our 'molecules to man' activities in the
newly formed IPI (Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation)."
