Women encouraged into Science
and Engineering
Women
engineers of the future were sought to take part in a taster course that
provided an opportunity to look ahead to a rewarding career in Engineering,
Design and Technology.
The University ran
the WISE residential course for female students in Years 11 and 12. The
course gave an insight into what professional engineers do, the different
engineering disciplines available as career options and a taste of University
life.
The
programme was part of the University's 'WISE' programme - Women into Science
and Engineering - which actively encourages more females to consider engineering
as a possible career option. The programme included an International Rescue
Project where students were asked to design and build a floating platform
with a lifting device to hoist crashed Thunderbirds II from the 'sea bed'.

One of the participants test the hovercraft students were asked to design
and build.
The participants were
also given the chance to pick the brains of academic staff from across
the School of Engineering, Design and Technology during a Question and
Answer session.
At the end of the
course, the students were awarded certificates and prizes for the best
project.
