You and the Web
Members
of staff recently attended a seminar to mark the launch of the Code of
Practice for Web Authoring.
The World Wide Web
Advisory Board has developed the Code of Practice to help web contributors
address the legal issues associated with the recent Special Educational
Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA) which updates the Disability Discrimination
Act 1995.
Left to right:
Claire Gibbons and Ruth Whitfield.
The University has
a moral and legal duty to ensure that electronic information, including
websites, is accessible to those with disabilities.
Director of Marketing
and Corporate Communications Alison Darnbrough opened proceedings with
a talk 'Clearing and beyond - the Web as a marketing tool'.
Marketing and Corporate
Communications' Web Officer Claire Gibbons gave a tour of the information
available on the University's external website. This
was followed by an overview of the SENDA requirements by Learning Support
Services' Web Administrator Ruth Whitfield. Director
of Learning Support Services Stan Houghton highlighted resourcing issues
and considering possible ways forward.
