University Launches Pennine
and Yorkshire Studies Unit
The
University's School of Lifelong Education and Development has launched
a Pennine and Yorkshire Studies Unit to do further research into past,
present and future aspects of the county.
The Unit will promote
knowledge and understanding of the area and will act as a forum for debate
on the future of the region. It will also provide courses of study, and
act as a reference point for queries.
Head of the new Unit
Dr George Sheeran (pictured right) said: "We get a lot of enquiries
and requests for information from all sorts of individuals and organisations.
Now there's a one stop shop where they can go."
Dr Sheeran teaches
a Certificate of Higher Education in Pennine and Yorkshire Studies and
a degree in Local and Regional Studies. His particular academic interests
lie in the political and cultural organisation of space and he is currently
researching the cultural landscapes of aristocracy in eighteenth century
Yorkshire. The Unit's Co-ordinator Paul Jennings is researching the social
history of drink and the public house.
The Unit aims to:
- Foster research
and publication into the historical and contemporary Pennines and Yorkshire
area. The Unit hopes to build upon the success of a previous paper on
Housing for Masters and Workers in nineteenth century Keighley.
- Provide courses
of study which examine and analyse the history and current development
of the area. At undergraduate level there is the certificate in Pennine
and Yorkshire Studies leading to the BA in Local and Regional Studies.
- Act as a source
of information and comment to the media and to the general public on
the area.
- Provide opportunities
for postgraduate research.
- Act as a forum
for debate on the past, present and future of the area. It is hoped
a regular seminar programme will be presented and there will be occasional
day schools and conferences.
