Opportunities for Parents

The University is offering parents who are South Asian and live in the inner city a chance to improve their skills and confidence while supporting their child's education.

The course, entitled 'Parents into University', has been funded with a grant from the European Social Fund. It is aimed specifically at parents who are unsure of their own abilities and would like to help their children do better at school.

Professor of Lifelong Learning and Dean of the School of Lifelong Education and Development Geoff Layer said: "The course will enable parents to brush up on their skills in English, Maths and ICT. There will also be an opportunity to try out other Higher Education courses in a subject such as counselling skills, ICT or sociology."

Applicants should have few (if any) previous qualifications and should be looking to improve their career prospects.

The course is free and help with childcare and transport costs may also be available.
