Fire Safety for Students
A
student-driven initiative regarding fire safety has led to a joint project
between the University, the Students' Union and West Yorkshire Fire Service
to get the message through to students that smoke detectors are vital.
West Yorkshire Fire
Service have sponsored this project, and have provided the Union and Student
Financial and Information Services with hundreds of free smoke alarms
to be given to students.

Fire Service.
The Students' Union
Shop has provided batteries. Many alarms have been given out already.
Dave Wolfson, one
of the students who initiated the project, said: "When I first approached
the Union, I didn't know what the reaction would be or how to tackle the
problem of apathy towards fire safety. I'm really pleased that the Union
and University have worked together, and I think we can say we're addressing
the problem."
Initially, the scheme
targeted placement students. More alarms will be given out to returning
students in the first couple of weeks of term.
Students' Union Women's
Officer Kate Greenfield said: "This joint project has brought together
people responsible for student support to work in one direction. We hope
this initiative reaches many students, and at least makes them think twice
about fire safety. We're hoping to get members of the Fire Service at
a Union event at the beginning of term to reiterate the message that smoke
alarms are vital - and have some fun, of course!"
