Student Engineers rewarded
for effective communication
Four
universities recently took part in the Queen's Silver Jubilee competition
aimed at encouraging student engineers to communicate effectively.
Presentations were
based on each student's final-year project and covered a wide range of
topics within mechanical and medical engineering.
The students taking
part were: Tony Carter and Richard Jex, both of Sheffield Hallam University,
Darren Moyles and Colin Urwin, both of Leeds University, Sarah Owen, of
Sheffield University, and Ewen Thompson and David Wolfson, both of the
University of Bradford.

Silver Jubilee competition.
The Judges were the
Institute of Mechanical Engineers' Regional Manager Peter Collins, Regional
Administration Officer Jim Douglas, and Regional and International Operations
Executive Officer Elena Gonzalez.
Before choosing the
winners, Peter said: "I am impressed with the very high standard of the
presentations seen and it has been difficult to select an overall winner
and runner up."
The winner was Sarah
Owen, whose presentation was on Finite Element modelling of the human
brain and skull during extreme dynamic movement and impact of the head.
The runner-up was Darren Moyles with a presentation on Improving the Efficiency
of Production Processes at Unilever Faberge.
The event was organised
by the Chairman of South Yorkshire Young Members Panel, Joanne Lewis,
Member of South Yorkshire Young Members Panel Anna Chan, and the University's
Dr Mike Rose.
