This year is the 40th anniversary of the programme and Granada Television are planning to put together a programme on previous winners, looking at the various team's experiences and the memories associated with the year in which they won.

Although the series is aired on BBC2, University Challenge is now produced by Granada Television. Students from the University of Bradford won the programme shown on the 28th January, 1979.

The University defeated Lancaster University in the third leg by 215 points to 160. Organisers of the planned archive series need help in tracing the students.

Anyone who has any information should contact Rachael Ellis in the University's Press Office.

The winners were:

  • John Simkin (PG Diploma in computer science in 1979)
  • John Watt (PG Diploma in computer science in 1979)
  • Mike Bradford (MSc in computing 1979)
  • Maxwell Cooter (BA in HIS)
  • Martin Lee (BSc in Social Science 1978)
