Staff and Students Travel
Survey
Staff and students are being
asked about their travel patterns as part of a bid to improve environmental
awareness in higher education.
The survey will consider how
staff and students travel to and from the campus, and will examine issues
such as parking and congestion. Students and staff will be able to access
the on-line survey in early May.
The project's Director, Senior
Lecturer in Environmental Management Dr Peter Hopkinson, said: "The survey
will provide us with invaluable information which can then be used as
a benchmark for other universities. The outcome will be heightened awareness
of opportunities for improvement."
The survey is part of the 'Higher
Education - Environmental Performance Improvement' project (HEEPI). The
two-year project is led by Bradford, and funded by the Higher Education
Funding Council for England (HEFCE). It involves a partnership between
four universities - Bradford, Gloucestershire, Leeds Metropolitan and
UMIST - together with Yorkshire Universities and the Joint Procurement
Policy and Strategy Group.
The project also has close
links with the Association of University Directors of Estates. In September
2002, News & Views revealed how the project aimed to establish benchmarking
schemes and enhance the change skills of key professionals in estates
and procurement considering such issues as energy and water consumption,
and transport and waste.
The HEEPI project has now been
given £100,000 by HEFCE for Phase 2 of the project, which will involve
rolling out the scheme nationwide.
