Scandals
on the Table
The scandals at Enron, WorldCom
and Global Crossing have placed the corporate governance systems of modern
corporations under closer scrutiny than ever.
Professor
Igor Filatochev.
For the first time, corporate
governance was placed under the spotlight in a unique forum; the first
international conference on the corporate governance life-cycle, which
was held at the Bradford University School of Management.
Speaking about this major event,
internationally-respected authority Professor Igor Filatotchev said: "Allegations
of lapses in the personal and professional integrity of accounting firms
and their corporate clients have undermined confidence in capital markets
and other institutions of modern capitalism.
As a result, investors and
regulators are forcing companies to improve disclosure policies, rethink
their relationships with auditors and strengthen corporate boards as part
of a wide-ranging reform of corporate governance."
Academics, business people,
consultants and regulators from across the globe travelled to Bradford
for this unique event, entitled 'Corporate Governance Life-Cycle: The
Research Agenda and Practical Implications'.
The forum was held in association
with chartered accountants and business advisers RSM Robson Rhodes.
Senior Partner at RSM Robson
Rhodes, Chris Connor, said: "This conference gave companies a full understanding
of the implications, and the investment needed, to effectively implement
the recent Higgs and Smith reports, which both suggested changes to the
corporate governance systems currently in place. It will help companies
to build and manage effective boards and to ensure investor confidence."
Keynote speakers included:
Government adviser and former Chairman of Northern Foods, Lord Haskins;
Controller and Auditor General of the National Audit Office Sir John Bourn;
and Chairman of the Weir Group plc Sir Robert Smith.
