Role of Media in the Community

The University's Programme for a Peaceful City (PPC) recently held a discussion on the role of the media in Bradford. The event focused on the challenges presented by community divisions and the potential for the media to play a constructive role in addressing these tensions.

The discussion was one of a series addressing the impact of the international situation on Bradford, as part of the PPC's aim to create opportunities for safe, open debate about issues affecting the city.

Event organiser Heather Blakey said: "Media coverage of events is clearly one key aspect in this respect. It is recognised that the local media in particular have an important positive contribution to make in terms of good community relations across the district.

The PPC arose from the initiative of staff, as academics, to understand what is happening to social relationships in the Bradford district, and concerned, as citizens, to help define productive ways forward, towards the goal of a community in the district that is diverse, tolerant and safe.

The PPC is joined by other organisations active in fields such as youth and community work, interfaith education, and urban regeneration, such as Bradford College, the Bradford and District Metropolitan Council and community groups.
