BOEING FLIES INTO BRADFORD

Boeing Sales Director Michael Thackery (left) with Dr Andrew Caruthers from Industrial Technlogy,Students from Industrial Technology were recently given a sneak preview of the latest dimension in air travel.

Michael Thackeray, Sales Director for Boeing, (pictured left with Dr Andrew Carruthers from Industrial Technology) gave a talk entitled - The Boeing Market Forecast. The talk focused on how Boeing see the market for civil air travel developing in the next two decades, and the aircraft development and engineering strategies they intend to put in place. Central to their plans is the development of an aircraft capable of operating at transonic speeds (just below the speed of sound) which will have greater range than conventional aircraft and utilise technologies with reduced environmental impact.

Michael said: "The aeroplane has been nicknamed the Sonic Cruiser by the press, I would expect to see it on the market sometime in this decade. The response from the students was very encouraging, they asked a lot of very good questions and they had obviously sussed the key issues and differences between Boeing and our competitors."

The talk is part of the Civil Aerospace Manufacturing and Business module which started in February, offered to all engineering students and will also include a talk from Captain R Hill, Director of Flight Operations at British Midland on May 14 who will talk about development in aircraft control technologies.
