Top young scientist visits Bradford

The University's Department of Biomedical Sciences has been helping a scientist from India pursue his research in the field of molecular epidemiology.

Alok Dhawan.Alok Dhawan (pictured left), who is from the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC), in Lucknow, India, graduated from Lucknow University with a doctorate in biochemistry in 1991.

Shortly after receiving the prestigious Young Scientist of the Year Award, from India's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, in 1999, he was granted a BOYSCAST fellowship (Better Opportunities for Young Scientist in Chosen Areas of Science and Technology), by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

This enabled him to travel to the UK for a year to pursue his research with Professor Diana Anderson, who is currently Chair of Biomedical Sciences.

Building on the knowledge and experience he has acquired in the past, Alok has focused on ways of determining whether populations have been exposed to hazardous chemicals that may prove detrimental to their long-term health.

During his stay at the University, one of Alok's objectives has been to refine his ability to use and analyse comet assays.

Another has been to learn how to detect oncoproteins, which are probably early markers of cancer, in human plasma samples, and to identify damaged chromosomes using fluorescence in situ hybridisation techniques in lymphocytes.
