Experts examine dementia care
The University's Bradford Dementia Group recently hosted a two day conference
titled 'Maximising the Effectiveness of Dementia Care Mapping.'
The
event was attended by Dementia Care Specialists representing a range of
professional backgrounds. The purpose of the conference was to examine
how Dementia Care Mapping can be revised in order to maximise its role
in promoting quality care for sufferers and to discuss what improvements
can be made to training in the UK and abroad.

Murna Downs, Professor in Dementia Studies and Head of Bradford Dementia
Group said: "Dementia Care Mapping has grown into an internationally recognised
method for evaluating care and promoting staff development within formal
care settings for people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
The number of people affected by dementia is growing and concerns about
the adequacy of formal care services for people with dementia have been
raised for a number of years."
Dementia Care Mapping is the first systematic method to have been devised
for looking at details of the care process. It involves producing a dementia
care 'map' which summarises the overall quality of care.
This information is analysed and used to improve the care process. Papers
presented at the meeting will be collated into a booklet and the conference
will yield a report that will be made available over the web.
